Cutting and programming keys

If you have a door lock from the vehicle a locksmith should be able to make a new key from a blank. Key blanks are available on Amazon (yuk) for under $8. http://www.amazon.com/Chevy-Cobalt-Transponder-Ignition-Programming/dp/B006BDW0G2

Once you have a key that will operate the ignition switch you can use the 30 minute learn procedure below to activate the key for operation. Using this procedure you may also switch out the entire ignition lock on your vehicle with another switch and key.

This 30-minute learn procedure should be used when all vehicle keys are desired to be replaced or reprogrammed. This procedure will erase all previously learned vehicle keys from the TDM. Once the 30-minute learn procedure has been completed, any remaining vehicle keys may be programmed using the Adding Keys procedure to ensure their continued functionality.

With an unlearned master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Observe the security indicator, after approximately 10 minutes the light will turn off.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.

Important: The TDM learns the key transponder information upon the ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.

With a master vehicle key, start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information.
If additional keys are required to be learned, refer to Adding Keys .

There are actually two different procedures. The one Dan posted above is in the event you don't have a current key. That process wipes everything from memory and starts over.

If you just need a second key, it's much easier. I did this, and it works great. Make sure you have a chip key by ensuring there is a "+" symbol towards the top of the metal key portion. After you get a key cut, do this:

1. Using current key, turn ignition to on. (Don't start)
2. Turn ignition off, and remove key.
3. Within 10 seconds, insert new key and turn ignition on. (Don't start)
4. Turn ignition off, and remove key.
5. Verify your new key works.
