Direct buying from Copart

I did not sufficiently checkout the requirements for directly buying through Copart avoiding the ABetterBid broker fee (about $260 as I recall)

For many states (mine - Texas - included) you can buy salvage title vehicles directly from Copart. There is NO registration fee to allow you to bid $1000 or less.

From the website it says that the individual Copart facilities determine eligibility which I assume means (for example):
If you live in Indiana, a state that requires a broker, you could buy a Texas salvage vehicle because Texas is a state that does not require a broker.
However if you live in Texas you cannot buy an Indiana vehicle directly!

Here is a link to the state by state bidding requirements.

Something witty
Dan, that's great information to have. I think I wrote this in another post, but if you pay with credit card there is an up-charge for that as well. Copart, is still a great resource but there is also a lot of fine print.

With ABetterBid I had to do a bank wire transfer (within 2 days as I remember). Setup a credit card would have been nice.

@ Dan Perry

Just wanted to pop on and thank you Dan for all the stuff you've posted about your donor acquisition. Luckily I'm in WA and can purchase through Copart without a broker! I've placed a bid on an 06 SS within pickup distance from me. Wish me luck!

Thanks Adam! Can I get a collective guesstimate on an acceptable price on this car?

I figure it's almost in good enough shape to be a rebuilder which is kind of a bad thing...lots of guys doing that in Spokane. Luckily it doesn't have the Recaros... From looking around at local private sales I could buy a similar but roadworthy one with rebuilt title off craigslist for $5k....maybe even less across the border (I'm about 15 miles from the Canadian border).

Here's a VERY comparable one on local CL similar everything + recaro's + clean title for $4900 ask...

$1500 plus fees?

Another note on directly buying through Copart - I found out today - you cannot bid on more than one vehicle at a time without having a deposit. You always have to have a deposit through abetterbid - I think it was $400 refundable.
