Direct buying from IAA

I registered with IAA - they had quite a few SS models (thanks PHerder). I figured that since through Copart. Texas allowed the general public to purchase salvage cars that IAA would also. Not so. IAA has a list of sites from which the general public can buy. Here is a link to the list - NONE in Texas although they have several facilities in Texas. To buy a Texas car you will need broker. I have not found the brokers (like abetterbid) for IAA.

Open to public facilites:
https://www.iaai.com/locations#opentopublic=true

You can slide the little control on the page to get a list of all sites.

Bu the way - registration (to buy) is $200 per year for the public. Registration to view is free. The $200 is not refundable although if you buy a car they will credit the fee to the purchase.

I called an IAA facility here in Texas to find out why I could not bid directly on Texas cars. The person told me it is just up to the IAA location and here in Texas you need to have a broker.

Bidding on IAA is live bidding with an auctioneer and buyers at the lot - you get an audio streaming feed, hear conversations between buyer and IAA. A different experience. They also do not necessarily go in order of how they are listed.

I have now bid on and lost the bidding 3 times on IAA. The first time the vehicle was pulled off bidding. The other two time the vehicle sold to someone else at EXACTLY my high bid. Here is what I think is happening. As the bidding is live, the auctioneer knows or sees our bids as the auction proceeds, maybe not the max bid but certainly our higher bid than the onsite bidder. The auctioneer then extracts from the onsite bidder a higher bid that outbid our previous - but not at our max bid - he probably does that without knowing our high bid. But once that onsite person bids at or above us, there is no one else left to bid and we really don't have a chance to up it again. I tried last time to up the bid but the auctioneer called it before the bid went through.

As I have tried both, I really prefer the Copart auction. I think we have a much better chance of getting a car.

Thanks Dan, I'm sure I'll be buying more project cars and I will just stick with Copart. It would be nice to just buy direct from the insurance companies, but apparently that is frowned upon in most places/scenarios unless you are the insured.

It's really disappointing how poorly IAAI auctions are working out. You'd think the insurance companies would want IAAI to make sure they are getting the highest bids possible. I wouldn't be happy if I was one of those insurance companies.

@jkean
That would be great. The insurance agency wouldn't have to deal with auction fees if they'd just sell directly to Goblin builders.

Dan, are you bidding online during the live auction? I just came across this on the site, might explain...

Tie Bid Policy - Should a tie occur between a proxy bid and a bidder attending the live auction, the live bidder will be awarded the vehicle. In the event of a tie between two proxy bids placed for an IAA sealed bid sale, IAA will solicit follow-up bids from each party involved in the tie. If tie cannot be broken, Branch Manager may award vehicle to bidder who placed bid first or rerun the vehicle.

I think the problem is the only way we are going to ever get a car through IAAF is if we bid so high that no one live bidding will take it for our bid.
