Formula SAE Car Competition

Since we are all building cars, maybe you might be interested in what Kaleb is up too while in school. Last year during the summer between his Junior and Senior year, he was able to attend University of Missouri S&T (Science and Technology) Formula SAE Car Camp in Rolla, Missouri. He was able to experience what it was like to be part of the car engineering and design club for the SAE competition car. Ever since then he couldn't wait to be part of the club. He now is officially a member of the team while attending Missouri S&T.

This is the current test car while a new one is under construction. The 600cc Kawasaki 4-cylinder engine can be barely seen here missing the intake, the intake is on the dyno engine currently for testing. In the background is an older car that is being used for spare parts. All of the body pieces are made of carbon fiber in the shop. Pay close attention to the rear suspension, very interesting.

The tires have covers on them. There is actual suspension in the front that is hard to see and is behind the lower a-arms. The red button on the brake is mandated and in case of loss of brake pressure, the pedal will go to the limit, hitting the switch and killing the engine.

Here you see the new frame taking shape on the rig. Kind of remind you of something? These cars are limited to less than 400lbs (minus driver).

This is where Kaleb spends most of his time, in the dyno room. This is the dyno engine and they are currently testing a new intake design. I know, it looks really weird, but as part of the contest, they are limited to a intake size of only 20mm. This restriction can be see at the base of the carb (yellow arrow). The idea is to get as much velocity as possible and then distribute it to all four cylinders through the equal-length intake tubes (curved tubes).

Very cool. I did Baja SAE while attending Western Washington University. The Baja team has kind of died off there, but FSAE team is still around. Maybe the two will run against each other at Lincoln.

I had a few friends in college at Iowa State University that were on the formula one club. Some of them worked on the car for all four years of college and never were allowed to sit in the seat.
Very interesting stuff but was taken too seriously that it removed all the fun.
