V1 Firewall Bolts

I’m looking to use button head bolts to secure the firewall and not use the supplied rivets. Any suggestions on size?

I was hoping to just tap the steel tube and install the bolt. I do not have a rivnut tool, probably could get one easily though.

Anyone just go directly in the frame?

There have probably been a few people that's done that. You just don't have much to thread into, would have to be careful not to strip them.

People have tapped the tubes themselves. Like KS said, there’s not much to thread though. You’d still want a lock washer of some sort. I also used m4 rivnuts, small washer and lock washer as well.

I tapped the firewall and not really pleased with how it turned out. If I did it over, I would just use standard blind rivets. I'm not sure when that would need to come out again and simple enough to drill or grind rivets off.

You are welcome to borrow my rivnut tool.

I started down this path with my tunnel cover and had issues. After drilling out a screw I snapped the head off of I used rivets and it was so much easier.

I also used rivets on my hood plate and drilled those out when I sent my hood in for wrap. It wasn't that big of a deal - much less effort than tapping the tunnel and dealing with issues.

I just ordered a bunch if M4 rivnuts, button head bolts, lock washers and nylon washers. Going to try this method for the firewall, side panels and center console cap.

I used M5 rivnuts for all of the sheet metal on the car. 4mm should work fine too

I did all of the rivnuts with the cheap harbor freight tool and aluminum rivnuts. the tool barely made it to the end of the project.
