V1 New Build Recommendations

I’ve noticed one thing this forum lacks is good stickies. As the build and post numbers continue to grow it’s already getting hard to find past information, and a lot of good ideas are buried in individual build logs. Hell mine’s 30 plus pages by now and ain’t nobody got time fer that.

So let’s make a new one stop shop for tips, tricks and what you woulda done differently. Keep it short and sweet.

I’ll start, and try to compile suggestions into the post below.

First off and maybe not worth mentioning just because it’s probably the first most recommended thing... LABEL EVERYTHING!! It doesn’t matter if you think you’re coming back tomorrow. Or in an hour. Before you unplug that connector get your sharpie and tape or better yet buy a label maker. Just do it.

I wish I would have installed a trailer plug at the front of the car connected to the tail lights. I flat tow more and more and dealing with lights is a pain. The four pin connectors are available with built in wire harness for like 10 bucks. What would have been a 10 minute job during harness cleanup is now almost impossible considering how much Tessa tape was used.

Which brings up the next: Electrical tape SUCKS. I hate it. It’s nice and clean for about 49 seconds before it gunks everything up. Tessa tape is better in every way, use it.

You’ll need accessory power as you add and swap things. I made a separate key-on box which has been really nice to have. http://dfkitcar.com/forum/index.php?threads/js-city-goblin-2010-ls.163/post-24376

So far the only advice I have is to buy a donor. Even if you are not planning on using the drive train from it. It sucks having to make a junkyard trip because you need 1 bolt or random part.

Ark :D
If you have the old style of timing chain tensioner, replace it ASAP with the new style, and while you're at it, you might as well do the whole timing kit.

Here's an image that compares the two types. The new style is on the LEFT, easily identified by its bulkier, thicker head.

Speaking of "while you're at it...", also install one of these.
