I’ve heard a few people on here say they did rivnuts for the side panels. Not sure why enlarging the holes before or after would matter though. Drill bit will do the same regardless. If anything, I’d suggest after assuming you’ll need to get the paint out of the hole after powder coat anyways.
I just did riv nuts for the firewall and center cap. I enlarged the holes so I could put m4 rivnuts in the firewall and just cleared the powder coat with the drill for the m3 rivnuts in the tunnel. Haven't messed with the side panels yet, but will. My frame isn't predrilled for those though.
Careful not to drill rivnuts into the bottom tube for the side panels. Weld on tabs if you want extra mounting points for the side panels, then powder coat and pull the radiator hoses thru. Otherwise you can add rivnuts to the diagonal tubes, just need a washer/spacer to reach the side panels.
We did rivnuts on the sides as well as the firewall. I'm not sure you want powder in the holes. You want to make sure the rivnit has something to bite into so it doesn't spin. I say do your coating and then enlarge the holes for rivnuts. It is nice to be able to pull the sheet metal easily.
