So I bought these two Colorful Hex Key Sets.

And during the ride home the state of mess that these draws are in has me stressed and annoyed, so I attach the following to completely embarrass myself to motivate myself to get my tools organized. Anyone have some suggestions?

The draws of the following are not as bad but will be reorganized.

I have a similarly organized collection of tools!

Mine are spending time riding around in various bags in the back of my Xterra while I wait for my shop to be built. It’s been a little frustrating hunting sockets and extensions for my donor tear down. I finally broke down and ordered about $150 in Olsa brand organizers to get started with. I hate the inefficiency that this clutter causes. My grandpa would be probably disown me if he were alive to see my tools. :D

I spent years “organized” like that. I ended up spending more time looking for tools than working. I tried various things, but came to the conclusion that every tool must have a specific home.
so do your best to make a specific home for each and every tool. So if the tool is not in it’s home, at least you know it’s in the shop, and you don’t keep digging through the drawer looking for it.
My workspace still ends up a complete mess, but now I can stop every once in a while and put everything back in the right place just so I can make it a mess again

I love the multi-colored hex keys. I have the Bondhus ones.

The key to organization is having more real-estate than tools. I've been in industrial maintenance for 11 years, and have two chests to make sure there's room.

A little organization will save you a ton of time. Don't look at the top of my boxes though, they're always covered in crap.

A big thing that I see that will help you is pulling all the random stuff that is not a tool out of your toolbox.

Dsteinhorst hit the nail on the head with "The key to organization is having more real-estate than tools.". I have 3 large tool boxes full of tools, and was still out of room. I was offered 6 very nice Hon brand filing cabinets for free. I use those for all of my kits and sets (axle nut socket set, puller set, c-clamp ball joint press set, etc.). That freed up a ton of space in my tool boxes for standard, frequently used hand tools and automotive tools. This system works great because when I'm looking for a set, I go right to the labeled filing cabinets. When I'm looking for a more standard single tool, I go right to my labeled tool boxes. Saves LOTS of time and frustration. Not a lot of things worse than having a tool that you need, but not being able to find it...
