Mk7 vs. Mk7.5 — What’s the Difference?
Volkswagen refreshed the Mk7 Golf lineup in 2018, often referred to as the Mk7.5.
1. Golf 1.8T TSI (2015–2018)
What to avoid
Volkswagen refreshed the Mk7 Golf lineup in 2018, often referred to as the Mk7.5.
- The chassis, engines, and transmissions stayed mostly the same, so both generations are fully compatible with the Goblin V2.
- Most differences are cosmetic: updated bumpers, lights, and infotainment systems.
- Minor changes to tunes increased stock horsepower for some trims but aftermarket tunes bring Mk7 and Mk7.5 engines to the same level.
- The DSG was updated from a 6 speed to a 7 speed. Good for economy but won't make a big difference in performance.
- For donor purposes, you can treat them interchangeably.
1. Golf 1.8T TSI (2015–2018)
- Found in the base Golf trim (2015–2018).
- EA888 Gen 3 1.8 liter engine, IS12 turbocharger, rated at ~170–184 hp.
- Torque converter automatic or 5 speed manual
- Often the cheapest option on the used or salvage market.
- Responds well to tuning. A simple ECU flash can push power close to GTI levels or IS12 can be swapped out for an IS20 for more power.
- Great for builders who want a budget-friendly donor with room to grow.
- Performance model of the FWD Golf.
- EA888 Gen 3 2.0 liter engine, IS20 turbocharger, rated at ~210–230 hp depending on year/trim.
- DSG dual clutch automatic or 6 speed manual
- Widely supported in the aftermarket. Stage 2 tune easily unlocks 300+ hp.
- Best for builders who want a fast Goblin right out of the gate.
What to avoid
- Golf R / any AWD (4Motion) Golf - Bevel box for rear drive will need to be deleted for use in the Goblin V2 chassis. Stick with FWD donors.
