Difference between road only and off road cars

I was looking for a Cobalt doner and found one that needs a clutch, has only 136,000 km (84,000m). I would have replaced the clutch anyhow so for $600 I was getting serious.
However after thinking the off road would give me some really fun options, like take it camping. But I just read the off road only comes as an automatic platform. Asking why may be a waste of time but what is the difference between a off road Goblin and a street one? Mostly suspension?

I like the fact that the road Goblin is street legal. It might be a challenge to plate and insure the Goblin AT. Not sure you care about that, but it might play into your decision. The automatic has a lower gear ratio which makes it better for the taller off road tires.
