What makes a goblin illegal for EM?

I know many moons ago I spoke with Jason and RR about this, but I am looking for something new to dip my hands into and I find myself looking into a goblin again. The rule book is kinda confusing for EM… I would love some clarification.

My end goal would be to make a goblin nationally competitive.

Define what part of the EM rules are confusing? At first read there may be some rules that appear contradictory, but EM does now apply to the DF Goblin (it's in the list of accepted kit cars) and some of the 'full body' car rules don't apply. The aerodynamic features are the major areas that can determine class acceptance, pay particular attention to these for wings, spoilers and diffusers.

A good person to talk to is @Justinreed7. He has the most competitive car in the community and would be a good source of information for what's legal and especially what works for competition.

The goblin was specifically named in the SCCA Solo rule book for XU class this year so long as you have 200TW or higher tires. If you intend to run a race tire lower than 200TW you would be in EM. As for specific legality I don't really know as most local regions will mostly group you with the prepared classes. I intend to bring the goblin to nationals either this year or next depending on current finances

I couldn't find the XU mention in the rules specifically but here is a post from back in December: SCCA autocross move from EM to XU

Oh man, XU is a run what you brung class on 200 TW, sounds like some F1 inspired aero to me

EM let us run the sticky tires. I found racing on 200tw tires to be a bit like skating.

I run EM on slicks. I prefer that over gambling with 200s. I know there’s a front and rear wing rule in terms of size but that’s determined regionally. State and Nationals they might get more picky.

Unrestricted!! I can attest to how good 200tw can be, and with unrestricted aero and enough power to push through it, should be buckets of fun

Have you tried the Yokohama A052. I switched to them last fall and they are really great. Did the first event last saturday and it was damp so i stayed on the 200TW and they worked great in the damp and once it dried up but was still ~45F

I can attest to 200 tw tires having plenty of stick. I feel like a lot of the goblin guys compensate suspension problems with more tire.

I am not trying to flame anyone here.

200tw tires have stick in a normal 2000+lb car, but the goblin is light, and those same tires aren't getting pushed into the road. What vehicle were you racing?

Yeah the goblin should still fit into EM but it’s a loss no battle with PAX in scca. You technically cannot run a wing on the goblin in EM because it is too light. I am switching to XU this year personally to have a more level playing field

Yep. you can make them legal in EM, but it’s tricky (or take the penalty). There’s less rules on 200tw tires. On slicks, It can mostly be done, but there’s still controversy about “the engine must be sealed from the passenger compartment” And how that can be done on a goblin. PAX also kills us. Locally, it’s just us goblins and a tube chassis LS swapped Miata, so we just run EM. We are all about the same speed, so it works out. If we get on a national stage, I don’t see us really passing tech, not to mention, we will get smoked by the big boys that have been doing this a long time. Switch to XU and do whatever you want as long as you are on 200tw tires.

A friend of mine in a 400whp Exocet was trying to get me to switch to XU and go to nationals with him. He said our cars should do decent up there, but man his Exocet is competitive on the vitour tempesta p1s. My A7s are a couple years old and sat for a while due to my wheel hop issue but he was a little faster than me. My excuse for weak driving was not having practice for a year. He raced 3 times just in that month lol.
