I have a separate forum thread involving an ECM communication issue. I still have not solved that yet but one of the questions I had along the way is... how can I interface directly with the ECM to determine if the unit is bad or if it's a wiring issue? I started researching making my own bench harness but that led me to finding the GODIAG GT100 device. It allows you to connect to any PCM/ECM outside of the vehicle. This is useful for ECM troubleshooting, diagnostics, coding and programming. It was on sale $75-80 bucks on Amazon. I'm not sure how much I will use it but certainly useful for my current set of problems. Worked like a charm. For reference, I connected 12v power leads to pins 3,19, 20 and 73, CAN- to 43 and CAN+ to 44 on J1 and ground to pin 73 in J2 (2008 ECM). Connect scanner to OBD2 and bam, I'm able to pull codes and read information directly from the ECM. Hope it helps someone out there!

I’ve read some ECMs outside of the car using HP Tuners much the same way you did. Very interesting. Doubt the VIN and other information and even searches the VIN online and found more information about the vehicle it was once in.

break-out boxes have been in use for sometime in the professional diagnostic shops. I wouldn't need one for a one or two time type of use in the home shop.
