I am about to put on a brand new OEM head and do the timing chain replacement.

If I have the rear end of the car on jack stands do I need to drain any of the oil to remove the timing cover?

just wondering what kind of spillage I am looking at. in my 2.4L jeep engine I had to drain 1 quart to avoid a mess.

Drain it all and do an oil change? I ended up having to take my pan off anyway, I had chunks of the plastic guide that fell down in all the nooks and crannies.
Was there something wrong with your head or did you decide to just put a new head on instead of cleaning the valves? (that's what I ended up doing LOL).

maybe but this oil only has 50 miles on it, I will reuse if I drain.

very poor compression in cylinder 4 all of the intake valves are looking very bad, I think I have a bent valve. for $300 ZZP sells an oem head with valves and springs installed so I went with that.

I don’t THINK it will leak since the top of the oil pan is below the bottom of the timing cover, but I can’t promise it won’t. It’s easy enough to drain and also with the new chain and stuff on it I poured oil on everything to prelube it. The nice thing is you only need to remove one wheel and just cut the metal hanger to put the new plate gasket on.

Looks like I am taking the oil pan off to go fishing for the remains of 1/2 of an M6 bolt and a few plastic bits of a chain guide.

going to try to enlarge the threaded hole from M6 to M8 and add a helicoil and make a custom bolt with spacer for the chain guide. I drilled the broken M6 bolt out but the hole is all messed up from the failure :-(

Perhaps helicoil or threaded insert of some type? Would save you from making a custom bolt that may (or may not) create other issues.

The hole is too big for a 6mm helicoil now I think I have to go up a size to 8mm.

I am also searching to see if there are any M6 inserts out there can I could JB Marine Weld in after oversizing the hole and mounting up the guide while the epoxy hardens.

I wouldn't bother with JB anything for timing components unless you feel like wasting an engine.

this isn't the upper bolt, it is the lower bolt in the same guide.
I too was thinking it's a different bolt. I'm not aware of any kind of "upgrade" bolt for this one...

Something like this may be an option? It's an m6 thread repair but the insert is an m10. Ive used these in the past with success on other things I stripped

*not sure if the one I linked is the correct pitch for your m6 so double check*

Can the LNF use the Dorman bolt to fix this, like I did on my LSJ?
I am using this for the top bolt.

but the bottom bolt snapped right off and I had to drill it out. I am going to use an 8mm helicoil that takes an 8.3 mm drill bit. I will swap the bolt that holds the guide to an M8x25mm flange head bolt with a high temp bronze bushing (8mm ID, 12mm OD, 12mm length) as well to hold the guide.

wish me luck I will post updates later.

If I have to I will epoxy a threaded stud into that hole and add a thread locked nut to install the guide.

this might work!

I ordered a couple different options and I will look at everything and decide how to do it. keeping the 6mm bolt would be ideal for sure. I got upgraded 6mm guide bolts from ZZP that wont break off like the OEM crap did.
