V8 Gobbler #511 (Extended Track, LSX powered)

Hello, my name is Joe Vyverberg. I plan on using this car mainly as a streetcar but would love to autocross it as well.

A good friend of mine has Goblin #347. Ever since he let me take it for a ride I was hooked. I knew I just had to have one of my own, but I am not a fan of the cobalt powertrain. It does have its advantages and is definitely the best route for most people as this kit is designed to be basically a bolt in setup. However, I have a fair amount of experience with the LS platform and fell in love with the simplicity/reliability/power that these motors provide with basic modifications. I also am not shy of fabrication.

It started with researching what transmissions are preferred for a mid-engine LS swapped vehicle. It seemed the most cost-effective ones ended up being an Audi 6 speed 01X or 01E. The 01E's are more durable but are harder to find and cost more. Most Audis in Germany were FWD Transaxles only and here in the US they were AWD, so it is uncommon to come across a FWD variant of the 01X or 01E. I then settled on an 01X transmission which I had shipped from Germany to the US.

I reached out to Kennedy Engineered Products for providing me with a package that will allow me to mate a GM LS series motor to an Audi transaxle. They sent me everything I needed and were very knowledgeable on what I was trying to accomplish. I received a billet adapter plate, flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, throw out bearing and all of the hardware required. The clutch may be overkill but it will support up to 650 ft lbs of torque. Top notch quality products and instructions.

The motor was simple. I opted for a 100k mile Gen IV 5.3 which is an aluminum block (to keep weight down). I purchased it for $300 on Facebook marketplace. I started by stripping it down for inspection and cleaning. I gave it a quick cylinder hone and reused the crank/rods/pistons. I installed a BTR stage 3 camshaft kit and deleted the DOD. The cylinder heads cleaned up like new after putting them in my vapor blast cabinet. I also lapped each valve into each port in the head. Replaced every gasket while it was apart and gave it a nice paint job.

Another big piece of the puzzle is the rear suspension. I wanted something not too custom because if components wear, I want them to be accessible at a local parts store. I started looking at suspension of various cars. I then found the perfect doner for the rear suspension setup. The rear suspension from a C5 corvette fit my goal. Readily available parts that won't break the bank. The geometry and strength of the axles, hubs and tie rods I feel confident in. I found an entire Rear suspension and cradle assembly on eBay for $400 delivered.

As far as getting all of this to fit. Luckily my buddy mike has a goblin and I was able to take measurements from his car and visualize how to make this a reality. The wheel base will be longer but only by a desirable amount. The goal is to design the subframe to bolt into a goblin chassis with no cutting or welding on the factory chassis. The subframe will hold the motor/transmission/control arms and coil overs. The reason for this is if it would be desired by anyone. In the future I will be able to replicate this subframe for someone else and have the recipe for what they need to do what I've done by taking the fabrication work out of it.

I am very thankful for the guys at DF putting a custom package order together for me as there were a lot of cobalt specific parts that will not be required for the direction I am going with it. Cannot wait for the chassis to be delivered so I can start the fabrication process. Happy to be a part of this community and hope I can leave a lasting positive impression! If anyone has any questions, comments or ideas I would love to hear them as I am open to everything! I will try to keep active on here and keep updating as I go along. I have been taking photos of the process so far and will be dumping those in here when I get a chance!

So your plan is to install the LS in a north-south configuration and not east-west configuration using a transverse transaxle? OK, sounds doable. First question, where will the fuel tank reside - in the same location or elsewhere? How much of a stretch on the wheelbase? I'm guessing at least 14 inches. Will the 1.25 inch frame tubes in the rear half of the standard Goblin frame be strong enough for the torque - the torque moment moves from a fore-aft motion (forward push) with the transverse engine to a lateral twist moment that will want to roll the chassis? May require upping the frame tubes to 1.5 inch. Will be interested to see this progress - please post lots if photos.

Wow, you have been doing a ton of research. Nice project!
There are 2 builders working on a LS4 based goblin, but you are the first with an inline V8 rather than a traverse mounted LS4.
Is the 01X 6 speed shifted in a H pattern? Does it have an open differential?
Is DF making a custom rear subframe with the mounting points for the C5 corvette upper and lower A arms?
Looking forward to your build.

Correct, engine facing north-south. I estimated an increase in wheelbase anywhere from 10-16inches depending on how close i want it to the cabin wall. Fuel tank will be in same location but will be completely custom as i plan on pushing the snout of the crankshaft as close as possible. Im toying with the idea of doing a split tank and just a hose on the bottom to connect them. As far as structure. I have the ideas in my head but will be much easier to think through how I will actually be strengthening the frame once I have it sitting with the motor in there.

Thank you! I did have a few sleepless nights thinking and planning to see i could do it under a certain budget and actually make all the pieces work together. Yes it is a 6 speed and it is shifted in an H pattern. But I do have ideas for a sequential style shifter. Differential is open, but there is a company that will get me parts required to make it a posi or LSD. As of right now DF doesn't offer anything for what I'm doing. Which is why im doing it haha. If somebody offered an LS swap conversion for the chassis i would have bought it for sure. But it will be no problem for me to just build my own.

Yes, those Audi FWD trans in a 5 speed are "chicken's teeth" in the US, I believe the Boxter is similar. Watching you closely, as I dare to be different too. Can't wait to see how things progress!
We hope to build a GOB-BALT(Cobalt shell) with the S/C Buick 3.8 and that trans mounted Mid-engine, N/S. For us the Cobalt shell is a known platform, has electric steering and is a workable size. We mostly needed "an office" for our insanity, everything else is change-able.

Oh boy!! Here it is again!
As Winston Churchill once admonished, "We need less Jaw, Jaw and more War, War!" This poster seems to have a plan and is in motion! He shows a willingness to expend a buck or two in pursuit of his goal! It won't be long now! I've never worried about the money others spend, that is their choice! I'll happily watch anyone daring to be different. This certainly looks cool!

I love the creativity!

I have a terrible trait where I overly obsess over things and over indulge. I lose sleep over ongoing projects lol. So stay tuned. It'll be driving months after I get the chassis!

Did you visit my mess? I must confess I am driven by the urge to build on the cheap; FIRST. Add to that the complication of being on the road 10 months straight and only having weeks in the shop. (But I do get to do fun stuff while on the road, I'll be in the Lands Down Under until December.) Returning to my garage by March. We shall see IF I am on to something when it actually drives!
It is distracting waiting for the next installment of your journey. I will be fine, just keep doing your thing!!

Oh, and speaking of obsessing over stuff. I woke up last night to thoughts of, "Ya oughta dry sump that motor before building the subframe around it". Easier to do it now than later, ground clearance, half shaft centerline height and other stuff like oil starvation in corners. And with that tid-bit of arcanum released into the electronic effluvium, I'm off to my next adventure!, laundry with a side of grocery procurement.

Impressive work with the exhaust headers. Will be interesting to hear what this exhaust will sound like. I've only heard in-person one other 8 into 1 exhaust before and it was epic to say the least.

Is that the transaxle that will be used? It does extend quite far behind the axle centerline and the rear of the frame would require a like extension. Curious to see how it ends up configured along with the subframe (if you end up using one).
