Remove the valve cover and timing cover, look for those marks like you mentioned to be in those positions. If it’s not, keep rotating the engine until they are. It’s very specific like “cylinder 1, TDC on the compression stroke” kind of thing.

There should be a dot on the sprocket on the crank that needs to be at 5 o'clock while the cams are at 10 and 2 and cylinder 1 is TDC. I found it easiest to align the crank sprocket mark first then go to the intake cam and exhaust cam last.
