V1 Brian's City Goblin-06/Crate MotorTC #61

Ark :D
That looks freaking amazing! Nice job with it!

Still pondering how I want to go about adding audio to my car. Your implementation is so good, I'm jealous!

Hey Ark please let me know what DF says

Justin,

Per DF, the metal parts found in Brian's shifter were part of the original kit's design, but around kit #50, they were unable to source more because the ones they had were leftovers from a large custom order, made for a different customer. In other words, they were limited-run. DF includes the "tombstone tabs" in the kit to help spread the load out on the plastic clamp, which is good to know because I had no idea what those were for and did not use them, and I suspect a lot of people with manual Goblins have the same issue.

Not much done on the car this weekend. Yesterday was an all day wild goose chase for some parts. I ended up obtaining a tee fitting for my welding gas tank so I can have both welders hooked up. I also loaded my small welder with .023 wire.

I did a few test runs on some light gauge metal. The .023 wire makes a world of difference in being able to control the heat. It will come in handy for building my center console/shifter cover.

Today I laid the first two coats of flat black on the dash panel. I’m using a well reviewed method and actually rolling the paint and varying the thickness of the paint with each coat. Will hit it with 800/1000/1500 grit to gradually knock the high spots down and then spray two more coats of satin clear.

Made some mock ups of my 1st draft center console design. Wasn’t quite happy with the fit. Reworking it into a one piece console.

I hope to have it right by the 3rd draft, if this goes anything like my dash and dome light assemblies did.

Very nice, looks like it will be a little complicated to get welded up. Will there be enough knee room, being next to the passenger side?

Yes. It takes up no more space than the current shifter assembly & linkages. It simply covers everything up. Not so worried about the welding as I am getting the bends right.

Classy
I love that you went through all the effort to design it on a computer and then used CAD (cardboard aided design). I just skip right to CAD

I call it CADAD (Computer aided cardboard aided design.) If it looks good enough in cardboard, I’ll do all of the stupid additional bend radius math thats required for the metal.

I bought a few Milwaukee tools I couldn’t afford; the fuel angle grinder, 3” cut off tool, and metal circular saw. Super impressed with them.

Got the main center console piece cut out & scored today. I’m literally making this all up as I go through trial & error. All the corners of the console will utilize 1/2” radius bends. I scored all of the bend lines with the end of a file along a straight edge in order to make the bends easier.

I made a homemade 1/2 radius bending jig and got in a few practice bends to validate my technique.

I took all week off, so hopefully will be close to finished with the shift console by Sunday.
