New Member & Quick Donor Question

Hey guys, my name is Scott. I'm lucky enough to live right in Red Oak Texas which is obviously where DF is located. I've followed along for years now and in the very near future will hopefully be starting on my own goblin.

I'm looking at some donors now and my main question is about one specific one I've found. It runs and drives, is up for auction in a couple days, but is just marked as a Florida certificate of destruction. I've been researching rules, laws, etc and it all seems that it's fine to use a car that is branded as "non-repairable" for parts as it just can't ever be registered for road use itself as a whole vehicle. It will obviously go for a fantastically low price for a running and driving car since the title only permits it for part/scrap use and not road use. Does anybody have any insight that could possibly get in the way of using that sort of branded title for a donor vehicle?

Thanks in advance!

Should not be a problem (at least not in Missouri). All we need is a title or a bill of sale showing that we own it. The Goblin is completely different car and it's own title.

That's what I was thinking. That there just needed to be record and receipts of legitimate purchase/ownership of the major components.

This is questionable at best. You’re probably fine because you aren’t using the frame or body, and you’re not marked as flood damaged.

But keep in mind these exceptions do exist.

Assembled vehicles not eligible for title:

The following are not eligible for Texas title regardless of the vehicle’s previous title and/or registration in this or any other jurisdiction:
• vehicles that are missing or are stripped of their motor, frame, or body, to the extent that it materially alters the manufacturer’s original design or makes the vehicle unsafe for on-road operation as determined by the department;

• vehicles designed or determined by the department to be for off-road use only, unless specifically defined as a “motor vehicle” in Transportation Code, Chapter 501; or

*** • vehicles assembled, built, constructed, rebuilt, or reconstructed in any manner with:
**** • a body or frame from a vehicle which is a “nonrepairable motor vehicle” as that term is defined in Transportation Code, §501.091(9); or
**** • a motor or engine from a vehicle which is flood damaged, water damaged, or any other term which may reasonably establish the vehicle from which the motor or engine was obtained is a loss due to a water related event.

Dang that is getting off deep in the code Justin!
I have only moderate hopes that on June 22 a clerk is going to understand what I am doing at her window with all my info to register. Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised and have some good news to report!

When I did the stuff for mine, the person at the license office had no idea what to do. I brought the checklist I printed from the state of MO's website and showed them. Here's the list, here's the paperwork for each bit, this is part I need you to do. She didn't question me at all. she did the piece I needed and gave me my plates.

Have your paperwork in order, have a plan, be confident, and be nice :) . It may take a little work but you'll get it done.
