V1 SinisterSF's Turbo Build

Justinreed7
I took the intake off this morning, tons of buildup on the valves, but I don't think it would prevent them from closing. Then I removed the valve cover (that oil return line on the turbo is a real *****!). Timing chain has tension and I see no obvious valve train damage. Can I do any further checks from here or does the head need to come off now?

This is why I've been saying LSJ is the best option. LNF has too much carbon build up. I've personally known 3 guys that have blown their engine specifically due to the carbon build up and not keeping the valves clean. Good luck.

Note the large diameter breather hose goes to catch can on this LNF powered vehicle. Breather uses stock baffles in valve cover. Radically cuts down on the amount of blow by going into intake and large diameter transition causes oil mist to separate and fall back into valve cover. Also think that water/meth injection would also help clean back of intake valves plus cool charge to control pre-ignition. KAL

Hahaha! I have no idea what I'm looking at there, is that a space ship? You guys must be building some serious racers. I just want a little play thing to rip around town and take to the occasional track event day.

Kal,
What is the ecotec in the photo in? The frame orientation is off for the Goblin. I would be interested in see additional photos. Curious how they mounted somethings. One of the things I would probably change if I do another goblin is to not powder coat the frame until I have the car completely mocked up first. Like you see in the photo I would have liked to weld in the stand offs to the frame instead of going with stainless U clamps covered with rubber hose as mounts.
Additionally, is this a car that you are working on or have excess to. Reason I ask the mechanical build for the Goblin is relatively straightforward. My concern is the "gee wiz" meaning getting the computers working together with all the changes. ZZPerformance dumped me off to HPTuners they just want to sell me the programming software. I would hate to blow a new engine/transmission combo sky high as I practice tuning for my first time.
Thx, Bruce

BAR: Looks like your progressing nicely. Vehicle engine bay in photo is chassis #005 Unitec Racing's 999 SuperSport Mk2 demo car. My vehicle is chassis #008 the 999 SS Mk1 in my avatar. Currently chassis #008 is being upgraded to Mk2 specs. One of upgrades involved going from GM ECU to Life Racing ECU with custom tuning by Danzio Racing (the Life Racing US dealer) and ZZP's modified Borg Warner EFR turbo as seen in photo. Jumps HP from 340hp to 466hp in a 2400 lbs car. Probably need to find an Ecotec tuner close to your location for help and advice.

MotoIQ tested the 999 SS Mk1 and took a lot of close up photos. Check it out here: http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/ID/2512/Tested-999-Motorsports-Supersport-Racer.aspx

I did the leak down test. I undid the cams to take pressure off the valves. Air is coming out everywhere! What do you guys think? Blown head gasket, bad valve seats, and spent lifters?

Has anyone used the LHU as a replacement for their LNF? Looks to be the same as a LDK except you can use E85. I found a Regal with one of these motors, thinking about just swapping rather than trying to fix this tired old LNF.

Does anything need to be done to the LHU to work in the Cobalt?

You can use e85 on any engine with the right fuel system

What kind of cleaner did you use to clean the drivetrain? Or did you just paint it? Looks like a brand new engine and tranny, nice job

Here it is right out of the donor. All 70,000 miles of it.

Good Evening,
The engine and transmission were hot tanked when I had them all disassembled even after that they still looked a little sad. So I shot them with Alumi Blast by Seymour (spray can) most of the engine/trans shops in the area use it. Then they were shot with hi temp clear.

Yep, that head is porked. Did you hear anything coming from the crank case? Harder to tell with the valve cover off, so maybe throw it back on and remove the oil dipstick or fill cap and listen. That way, you know if the bottom end is good or not because it'd suck to do the head only to realize after it's on that you need a ring job as well...

I didn't hear anything from the oil filler, But I did hear it coming from the coolant hose fitting, not sure what that means. Either way I bought a LHU motor that only has 5k on it. I'm also buying another 2009 Cobalt SS from IAAI up in Indianapolis in a few days. I plan on taking the LNF out of that other car and putting it in this one and selling it locally since it's got a clean title. Then the LHU is going in the setup that's going in the Goblin. The extra engine may get rebuilt eventually and held on to for a spare or resold on ebay.

I put the valve cover back on, buttoned it all up and redid my leak down test on each cylinder again just to confirm. Nothing coming out of the dipstick tube. Bent valves most likely, but since I can buy a new head with everything installed I'll just do that rather than getting this head fixed. So new timing set, head gasket and the new head and this motor should be good to go! We'll see if I can get the timing set correctly haha!

Coming from the coolant hose fitting means it's either a head gasket or a cracked cylinder sleeve (or head). Most likely the gasket, less likely the sleeve, and least likely the head.
