Broken frame/Hood mounts

Guys, both of my frame mounts that secure the hood just broke off the frame. Has anybody had this issue? Guessing it's the bad Michigan roads

Fatigue in action! Yes, probably accurate to blame on the roads. Must be quite a few great miles on that! If you end up getting them welded back on, you can add some small welded gussets the sides a bit to try and prevent this happening again. It'd stiffen the bracket up and take a bit more abuse.

Plus, how did you get so much rust on these parts? I understand that everything in the upper Midwest rusts eventually, but dang! We're you on some salted roads or is this from getting caught in too many rain storms?

One of mine broke in the same spot. I had enough room to drill and bolt it on.

My opinion is these could be stronger.

Also, up here, we get that level of rust when storing our Goblins in a garage all winter!

One of the first things I did was take a welder to the radiator support bracket and full welded the pieces 360 degrees. Then added larger mounting bolts (5/16) with tacked in rivenuts. It's now strong enough for a sasqwatch to bounce on it! This is needed for mounting a front splitter to keep it firmly in place.

Rust isn't reserved for the rust belt. Anything that gets scraped/chipped to the point that it removes the finish will rust. I've seen plenty of bare frames in build logs that had way more surface rust than mine got sitting in a Midwest garage before it went to powder coating.

The bottom line is, if you scrape make sure you are touching up that bare metal with something or it will rust no matter where you live/drive.

4 years plus and my bare frame has light surface rust, in fact most of that came from the trip from Red Oak to Phoenix. Rust level varies by location and if El Nino is affecting the weather. :cool: Also using a primer/finish system that actually flows into the seams and crevices of the frame and parts makes a big difference. Many don't like POR15, but it gets into these places and prevents rust starting where it can't be reached by other finishes. My '91 Jeep YJ with the frame, springs, etc. done with POR15 had almost no rust, but the body on it (not POR15) was rusting away - living in the middle of the rust belt for all its life.
