Dzus Fasteners

Dumb question, but is there a trick to installing these for the hood? I took all the powder coat off the wire end on the radiator mount, but these things are a royal pain to get the screw portion to turn. Even with a proper cheap ebay tool, the bit just slips out of the slot. The slots don't seem deep enough for decent grip. My fasteners are so chewed up that they're on the verge of getting stripped out.

For something so simple, it sure is giving me hell.

What are you using to turn it? I used a thick flathead with pressure and turned slowly. It did slip a bit but it seemed to go ok. We use flatheads in the aero industry just the same for cockpit displays that use the same dzus fasteners.

I bought a dzus tool. It's basically a screwdriver with the tip contoured like the slot. Looks like it just requires a ton of upward force and maybe a bit of lube.

Never would have thought that a couple fasteners like this would be such a pain.

You may be able to bend your wires up a little to make it easier to lock if you go too far and the dzus is loose you can squeeze it back down a little.

I put a custom grind on a large slotted stubby screwdriver, curved it a bit to match. Takes a lot of upward pressure and being very careful not to slip.
