V1 Josh's City Goblin - 10 XFE Donor

SmsDetroit
Truck arrived Friday night. Its an 03 1500HD with a 6.0 and Quadrasteer. In really good shape for it's age. Basically zero rust, especially by Michigan standards. I plan on camming it, throwing on some headers (because the stock manifolds are leaking :p), and a tune. There will be body modifications, but nothing super crazy. Just cleaning up the old stuff. Might post it in "other builds" if I feel like it.

I've been doing it myself for a few years now with Fluid Film. Seeing as I have time to shake this down until I sell the Tacoma, I MIGHT get ambitious and take the bed off and at least lift the cab a few inches so I can POR15 the whole frame. We'll see though, that's a lot of work

Oh, forgot to mention too. I'm about 50/50 on manual swapping it with an NV4500. I haven't ever owned an automatic vehicle, so I'll probably get bored of this and swap it lol

Noice. Those engines are solid. :cool:Pre vvt and all (6.0l don’t have dod). it’s a unicorn with the quadrasteer, as long as it’s working, it’s awesome. 4L80e are also solid trans too

I take quite a lot of pride in being a millennial that only drives manual lol. I don't know if I can bring myself to do it. If I keep the Tacoma (manual) and just use this as a tow rig, I might be able to justify it. If I make it my DD/tow rig as was the intent, I'll probably manual swap it (assuming the ECM let's me).

Plus manuals are just so much more fun

-old man voice- I’m to old to shift :D

Sports cars and bikes, I got you. Manual all the way. Daily driver or tow vehicle, auto all the way. Put it in drive and go. Towing a trailer, hit tow/haul button and relax.

the 4L80e is probably the best electronic controlled trans built, next to the Allison 5 or 6 speed.

Maybe it makes a difference that where I live stop and it traffic isn't really a thing lol. I got stuck on 75 the day of the eclipse and traffic was horrendous. Then I truely hated it lol. I actually ended up putting it in 4LO for a bit so I could idle in first at like 0.5mph LOL

Yeah the NV4500 was the conclusion I came to. Factory option I'm 2500s I believe. The closer the factory the easier it'll be. I don't even thing I need a different length driveshaft for that swap.

We'll see though. Getting plated early this week. Going to drove it 500-1000 as is to see if it burns any oil, then reassess.

How many miles?

186K. It has great oil pressure, so who knows. Didn't really care when buying it since I'm obviously not afraid to tear down an engine lol. My buddy has the same truck, same year and it has over 300k on stock pretty much everything. Its just now starting to leak out the rear main a bit. Very impressed.

This is what I work on daily. 300 is easy to get out of these with hard work truck use. I have (or had) several Over 300k. After 200k they use oil, some a little, some a lot. Idle oil pressure should be a tick under 40psi, over 40 off idle. If you hear a tick noise or around 20psi at idle, drop the pan and replace the oil pick up tube o ring. Easy job. Well with 4wd it’s a little more work,

Don’t know. Never worried about it. :D Add oil and send it. After 200k, if it needs any major repair, I get rid of them and buy
another. It’s not worth the downtime to rebuild the engine, for me. I had one with 400k that would drink about a quart per 1000 miles. Ran like a champ, just stay on top of the oil. Sold it at 450 to the guy it was assigned to and he still has it as a throwdown.

The NV4500 has a super low first gear and a wiiiiiiide gear spread - it is typically driven as a 4 speed for most driving, starting off in 2nd gear (with short stockish tires and not towing obviously). The gear case is larger and heavier (iron case) than a 'stock' NV2500 or NV3500 manual transmission and the output speedo connection will need to be adapted (believe a 1 ton with a manual trans may be correct?). Not certain if a 'stock' bell housing will bolt up, believe the trans bolt pattern is different than the other more common manual transmissions. Just bringing this up for research into swapping to a NV4500 manual transmission. :)

The wife’s 04 Yukon has 587,000 on the original engine. I’ve replaced the rear engine plate and oil pan gasket for oil leaks and the left valve cover to the updated cover cause the drains were clogged and using oil. It uses a little over a quart between 5k oil changes

Does the quadrasteer function? I have been researching these quite a bit. Wanting to sell my truck to get out of a payment and into something cheaper as i do not commute much at my new job. There is one local to me that has been on the market (facebook) awhile.
gooodsystems.com has a more reliable option to replace the rear position sensor than trying to source an OEM part. The OEM sensors can go for more than $1,500 on eBay! o_O Even if yours functions fine now, may be a good site to bookmark for almost all parts pertaining to the quadrasteer system.
