Well, I've delayed making a build thread for some time now but getting to the point where I just need to start organizing information better for my build. I had some MAJOR delays after I tore into my donor - the previous owner told some white lies and this caused for some upset with build time frame but I'll get more into that later.

Anyway, the name is Rohri. My story is, I got heavy into tracking my motorcycle which then led into cars. I got to a point where I was borderline teetering between street-able and track only for my car. One day back in 2021, while running at Road Atlanta, I had the Exocet guys pit behind me. I walked over to chat with them as they were unloading for the night. Come to find out, they were testing an Ecotec power plant setup in one of their chassis. I was highly intrigued as I had a Cobalt back in high school that I really enjoyed ('07 grad to show my age). Fast forward the next day, the owner was in my run group with a potential buyer. He came flying by me in the braking zone into turn 6. Anyone that knows this track knows that corner is not a high speed area as you prep for turn 7. However, here goes that Exocet, barely on the brakes and held his line! I was immediately hooked and needed to know more!

Fast forward, when I got home after that event, I began my research. I admittedly at the time could not remember "Exocet" and searched on Google for Cobalt Ecotec kit car and came across the Goblin by accident! After doing some forum digging, video watching and market researching, I decided to start my hunt for a donor before committing to getting an order in. Shortly after I actually found one locally through a friend of a friend. This is where things probably started going south for me. The story on the car and where the "white lies" begin is that its originally a northern car and had rust - great, I don't need the body so that checks one box. I was told that car had been down for a short time because of brake line issues. They tore the car apart to replace the lines and do a refresh and lost interest in the project as they got in over their head. Cool - I don't need the brakes or ABS from the donor so not a big deal. I was given the rest of the information - 2007 ~128k miles and a few mods:

- 3in pulley, 42lb injectors and zzp remote tune at ~105k
- timing chains done at 95k
- GMPP clutch at 85k
- fuel pump at 110k
- zzp fuel pump rewire
- zzp 3" catless downpipe

I hesitated as we originally could not agree on a price. So, I waited and kept searching but not as heavily as I was before.

As the end of the year approached, DF announced that they would be raising prices. So, as the saying goes - it was either sh1t or get off the pot! I reached back out to the owner to try and renegotiate. We agreed on a price with the condition of him taking items I removed and didn't need from the car so he could sell. We shook hands and exchanged the title for cash. In hind sight - I should have probably passed because the next part of the story is where the horror begins...

Welcome! I look forward to seeing your build. There are great people and great info on this forum. I too became interested after seeing an Exocet. After lots of research…DFs videos and the massive amount of information on the forum pushed me to build a Goblin.

Edit: @kano501 sorry to take up reserved space! More than happy to delete now that I’ve said hello

I got the car home and in mid-December and I placed my order for my goblin. I had some delays with tearing into the donor. I needed to make room in my garage. Another car I had needed to be moved out and finding an adequate location took some time. Plus I already had a few track days scheduled with motorcycle and car so maintenance and some prep work needed to be done on those. Also, given the time of the year, the cold was not motivating to work on the donor outside.

Some quick pictures of interior (not sure about thumbnails vs full image but also don't want a massively cluttered thread):

One thing noted from the previous owner of the donor was that the car was not a G85 optioned car so it did not have a LSD transmission. Knowing that I was building a track setup, I began my search. The old redline and cobaltss forums are quite useful if you dig well enough. I came to find out the HHR SS/TC shared the same LSD transmission as the ss/sc. Having the part number(55563728 or 19301859 ), I was able to source one online at a junk yard and bought it.

In May, Kim posted up that my build was up on the jig and this got me motivated to get the ball rolling on my donor.

Good morning Goblin Family & Friends from all of us here at DF Kit Car! We hope y'all had a great weekend!

#390 on the jig this morning

Y'all have a great day, call or email if you need us!

Fast forward to around May 2022 time frame, I finally found some time to begin tearing into the donor car. And this is where the fun begins...

Before I brought it into the garage...

Thank you! I nerded out a bit as I'm a big fan of the Ariel Atom and knew they ran the LSJ platform once in the US. Did a ton of reading on those as well. I've been scouring on here and various threads. You are absolutely right - a lot of information and great members.

Okay, so as May rolled around and I had room in garage cleared out. A good friend of mine and myself worked on getting the donor stripped and parts "organized" as best as possible.

PXL_20220521_182704232.jpg

Worked on getting major body parts off outside first before rolling it into the garage. Might be some picture overload but also trying to clear out my memory storage! :p

Into the cave she goes and the remainder stripped!

On the body and engine removal, I started spotting a few red flags including frame damage...

Then to the engine and subframe:

At the end of May/early June I had a week long trip out of town scheduled and tried to get things wrapped up but happened t notice these in and around the car and parts...

PXL_20220522_002154257.jpg received_252705160392730.jpeg IMG_20220530_084529.jpg

So, I headed to Walmart and on the day I was headed out of town, I went full genocide on these widows!

PXL_20220529_000802006.jpg

Got back in town and let e few more off again just to be on the safe side as I saw some webs which led me to believe some survived. I'm pretty I got them all after that last round!

PXL_20220610_233933759.jpg

I wrapped up the stripping the dash and miscellaneous items on the donor, got frame on dollies ready for junk yard pickup and had harness boxed up to be sent of to DF in hopes to be ready when I went to pick up my frame and parts.

I had also gotten my pick up scheduled tentatively for end of June. I requested to get a ride in one of their SC cars so I can get first hand experience with one. I was really starting to get excited with progress!

Pickup time rolled around pretty quick and I planned the road trip with a best friend. The plan was to drive over to TX to pickup parts and on the way back, make a pitstop at Barber Museum, then drop off my frame and other parts for powder coating!

I didn't get to take as many photos I would have liked to on the trip but it was a great time. The only disappoint was that the SC goblin was not available when I went to pick up as Lonny had taken home to be able to go to a show that weekend right after. They were nice enough to give me a ride in a 2.2 turbo though. So, I did get some enjoyment. Had awesome chats with the Doyle family and got a good preview of the facility. I also had a sneak preview at the V2 goblin. I can talk about it now that it's been mostly announced. haha!

Later, at the very beginning of July, I got the call from powder coat shop that my frame and parts were ready! I scheduled for a week or so later pick up. I kept it simple with black. Mainly for cost but also I knew it would be used for track and didn't want to make her a show queen. I'd likely be doing some wrap graphics on the body panels.

Back home in the driveway and ready to begin assembly! I had only hoped...

I was following along on the DF Goblin YouTube videos and got to the point of prepping the engine when I noticed this on the stock header. I pulled it off to inspect further.

PXL_20220718_233700475.jpg PXL_20220718_234018838.jpg

You could see light shining through. Sadly, I'd need to replace and I wasn't too upset because this meant an upgrade. Being a northerner car, I wasn't too surprised but decided to do some further inspection on the engine while I was there...

Welcome. Your story should be a great read. I'm sorry for your donor misfortunes ... I had a little of my own, hence my having two donors. Looking back now, I could have worked through the donor #1 issues, but only because of skills I gained during the build.

Looking forward to reading more!

Hey! I would be interested in some of your cast off body parts(bumper covers, trunk lid leap to mind)and have some bits collected up for trading. I hope to pick up a turbo motor in Huntsville, AL on Friday.(from a goblin owner) I don’t actually have a use for it yet but I have space for it to lay around my place, even if it only nets me rods. I am not actually building a Goblin but have helped in some Goblin builds. I am (sadly) in the Greenville in GA. But we travel a lot and running parts trade to SC isn’t a big deal. I have scrapped several Cobalts and have many small parts for swap fodder. The project in my sig now rolls! (to do: plumb coolant transfer, bleed clutch, complete the rear brakes and bleed, exhaust, build bulkhead wall behind seats, mount fuel tank properly) but I am sidelined buying a home and all that fun.

Thanks, Ark! You have definitely been one I've read some posts from. So much appreciated for the contributions!

I don't have too much left as previous donor owner has taken the bulk of body items. Shoot you a message and I'll let you know what I have on my next day off!
