Replacing the timing chain set

Has anyone changed the timing chain on an lnf while it is in the goblin? The motor mount location makes it look impossible without dropping the motor out of the car. Any tips would be appreciated.

I replaced mine on my 2.2 in the Goblin. Deleted the balance shafts too. That was a chore. Had to loosen or remove all the motor mounts and move the motor around with a 2x4.

Tim I have a cart I used to roll the engine on you are welcome to use. Could have the engine resting on the cart while the Goblin is on jack stands allowing some movement for access without removing the engine or connections. Let me know and I bring it into town, need to have you up and running by the end of the month so I can assist if you want.

You might be able to get away with just unplugging some items and keeping the coolant and clutch lines connected and only drop the subframe a little to give you enough space. So, jack stands on frame, use an engine hoist and drop it down a little.

If that doesn't work, pick up a dolly from harbor freight (if you don't already have one) and build a jig for the subframe to sit on. My jig is just two layers of 2x4's in the shape of the dolly and then two longer 2x4's to support the front and rear subframe as the dolly wasn't wide enough. Drop it down onto the jig and roll her out from under the frame. Doing it this way you don't need an engine stand or fiddle with the front subframe mount.

I’ve done it in the chassis with an LDK block and an LAP block. Remove that right rear wheel and go at it. One of the timing cover bolts has to come out with a wrench rather than a socket. The upper left one that is real close to the chassis. You can get the bolt under the motor mount with a 1/4” socket extension with wobble end. The valve cover may be an issue depending on how you have your topside configured.

I did mine before I installed the engine (2.4 NA). I also replaced the VVT Sprocket & Solenoid/Actuator since the engine was at 87K. Replaced & upgraded the clutch at the same time. There are great video's on line to walk you through it. I figured it was cheap insurance.

I wanted to post this addendum. If you plan on removing the timing chain gasket then you need to snip the little portion marked with X's off. The motor mount is connected to that threaded hole. Snipping it allows the gasket to be removed without taking that bolt out. If the gasket is staying on the motor then no need to snip.

I'm not sure if this applies to all engine types.
