Sneak Peek - Goblin V2

Ross
I like Gray's videos. I didn't know if I had the skills to build a kit car. It was a challenge I wanted, and now I am glad I did.
I made mistakes along the way too, all good. Learned patience.

I have number 7 but we are starting to feel apprehensive on whether it’s ever going to get released. They keep moving the release date and their communication has been so far

Too early for that imo. This is the nature of engineering. When they said "Q2 2025" I immediately thought "oh thank goodness that means I have until at least Q4 to finish my e36 project car".

Bought a donor car. It's a 2015 Audi A3 1.8 FWD. It should be basically the same thing as a Golf 1.8 FWD, but the A3 comes with DQ250 trans.

Hope I don't regret not getting a 2.0, but GTIs around here were going for at least 2x the cost on copart and this was a pretty darn good deal IMO. I think the 1.8 will be enough, or more than enough for a small car like this. Thinking is20 or is38 swap, 2.0 HPFP upgrade, maybe a little ethanol and call it good power wise. Probably throw in a mechanical LSD while it's all out. Also looking at possible MT swaps and sell the DQ250, can't decide.

Maybe we could get a V2 section(s) added to the forum?

Well, I did it LOL. Put my deposit down for a V2 and purchased my donor.
2020 GTI with 23K miles on it. Hit lightly in left front. Actually, drives pretty nice. LOL
Chassis # V2-018 Run #2
Run #1 expected to start shipping very soon.

Does anyone have any data or experience with ecutek? Trying to figure out what I need but not able to make sense of it. This is the info from the V2 info pages on the forum.

  • The Goblin V2 can work with or without the donor key. If you plan to use the key, you’ll need the ignition switch and gauge cluster from the donor to integrate them into your Goblin. No key? No problem—just plan on buying an EcuTek system. Not only can it disable the immobilizer, but it’s also used by many Mk7 Golf tuners.

What he said basically. I'm working with the guys now to help figure this out and what modules are still needed and such. Unless you keep stock instrument and other oem modules, I'm not sure how feasible many of the off the shelf tuning solutions will be. Like, you'll have to just tuck away tons of random modules and stuff and overcomplicate many things just to do it.

Ecutek really never caught on for the platform and it's very expensive. There's actually several free flashing solutions and more and more people (hobbbyists and pro tuners alike) are using it. The platform/software is called VW_Flash (PC based) or simos tools (android based). VW_Flash works with openport or any J2534 device really, and simos tools uses an esp32 based dongle, Macchina A0 if you want something off the shelf, with some free custom firmware.

I think the DF guys are looking into various options like do it yourself, or mail them your ECU and/or DSG mech and they could flash it, send it back etc.
