V1 Ghostknife's #383 Track SS/SC

Ghostknife
Finished up the first two videos tonight, putting a hour in every night after work. Friday I have the whole day off so the plan is to get through some videos that day as well. Trying to label as I go!

Whew, trying to get through video 3. Should have bought a southern car for the donor. I’m wanting to start cutting stuff off lol. Got lots done but the tie rod is stuck in the knuckle at this point. I have a feeling I’ll be cutting holes in the floor for the subframe bolts.

Unfortunately I won’t have the time for working on the car today. I took overtime today, trying to get the new power plant fired up and they needed all hands on deck to help. The Brembos are very ugly but mechanically work, not sure if they are worth much to sell. I’ll be chipping away at it nightly bit by bit. I’ll have a bunch of time starting the 21st, as i go into my week off.

Just a couple of tips from when I disassembled not too long ago. My Cobalt was from NE Ohio and subjected to the same weather and road salt as yours probably was.

1. Heat (I use MAPP gas) does wonders for frozen fasteners.
2. Everyone has their opinions on penetrating oil. Some like Kroil, others Liquid Wrench, etc. I tried several, but my best luck came with a mixture (50/50) of transmission fluid and brake fluid that my uncle told me about. Old mechanics trick. I wasn't sure that it would do anything, but it got me out of several jams.
3. If you can, let whatever penetrant you use sit for a while - up to 2 hours in some cases. Hit it with some more a couple of times while you wait. Do something else for a while and come back to it when it's ready.
4. If you will be cutting up the shell to get rid of it (I had to), get the Diablo Auto Dismantling Blades. A Sawzall with those blades will go through anything on the Cobalt shell. I think I only went through 5 or 6 blades while cutting up the entire shell into 8 pieces.

I hope this helps some...

Still working on video 3, stinks to just put a hour in a night. I cut the tie rod end on the drivers side since the outers were wasted. Also on the drivers side the wheel bearing is seized into the knuckle. Luckily working in a power plant we have many different press's what should be able to pop them free. The passenger side everything just slid out like it was new lol. I also get Kroil free from work so that's my preference of penetrating oil, which I use liberally. Ive been trying to watch the videos ahead and start soaking the stuff now. Thank you for the heads up on the Blades!

They just hand the stuff out for free? That's nice of them. :) My company does that with nitrile gloves. :p

If I have descent ventilation, I'll heat AND use penetrant after. But, I try not to breathe in too much of the fumes from heated penetrant. So, in winter with the outbuilding doors closed, it's heat... and if that doesn't work, it's penetrant after cooling.

I've also heard guys swear by heating liberally, then touching a candle to the threads. Apparently, paraffin is drawn in and lubricates the threads. I've never tried it, but it sounds interesting. Enjoy your teardown. Good times.

im able to grab gloves too, nitrile, gorilla, leather ect. Have some good perks lol. Thanks for the helpful tips, that’s one good thing about being a fun toy car, if I get frustrated I can just walk away. Sometimes it’s fun to smash with a hammer though.

Small update, was able to put a few hours in today. Finished video 3 and half way through 4. Ended up having to cut off to rear drivers side subframe bolt. It was so finicky. Tried cutting a hole in the floor to access the nut and ended up just getting frustrated lol.
