I have got massive engine swaps about to happen. So I have had a 02 Jeep TJ for a few years now (daily driver) I replaced synchro's and a few other parts in the trans a few months back, but the trans is still giving problems. I thought about swapping the manual for the auto trans but, I really don't like the lack of power the 4.0 has anyway.
Enter the 98 Explorer 5.0 AWD, found one on marketplace for 1300,

i snag it up, it needs some work but not a problem. Now I have the 5.0 and Auto trans and an AWD transfer case(not good). No problem the weekend before i got the Explorer, I picked up a manual transfer case(BW4406) from a 99 F150 that will bolt to the 4R70W trans in the explorer. So now a have a motor, trans, transfer case to swap into the jeep.

Well while poking around on Copart I found a wreck 2011 F150 5.0 4x4 close by with no bids and 24hrs left before action time. So I tossed a $175 bid with a max of 1750. Well the next morning someone else bid on the truck it was up to 375, cool someone else wants it. Well it comes up on auction time, the counter does it's thing and well I now own a 2011 F150, GREAT.. but it was cheap $727 with taxes.

So what to do with this thing now. THEN I watched this video
YEAH i really shouldn't have. If your wondering yeah the 5.0 trans and transfer case from the F150 is going in the Explorer. Should be one heck of a ride launching in 4 Hi on the spray.

So what do you end up using out of the Explorer? I'm personally not a big Coyote fan myself but that's definitely the better of the two 5.0's you have on hand! Keep us updated!

Out of the Explorer for the Jeep will be engine, trans, ECM, harnesses and maybe the cluster not sure yet on that one. Oh and part of the rear drive shaft.

I thought F-150 has Ford's version of a ZF 6HP, not the 10 speed the real fast Coyote F-150s are running. And I misunderstood that you were going to be running the DOHC 5.0 Coyote motor from the F-150 versus the OHV 5.0 from the Explorer. Does kind of make sense based on the size of the block, I've always heard the Coyotes are really hard to get to fit into engine bays not made for them. Still looks cool!

Yeah the early F150 with the coyote has the 6R80 or ZF6HP up till 18 i think then the 10 speed was installed. I know the coyote will fit in a 2wd explorer engine bay because it fits in a Ranger engine bay basically the same same. My concern is the A/C box(I want A/C) and the front diff.

And will the Dana 35 front diff hold the power? I'm going to get the front diff from the F150 before I crush it.

Almost ready to pull the Coyote and 6 speed out of the F150, still need to pull drive shafts and the transfer case. The shafts and case should be out tomorrow and the engine will be out this weekend. More pictures then.

Heck of a Saturday getting the engine, transmission, and transfer case out, and moved into the building for storage. I have a week or so left of stripping the F150 down before it's off to the crusher.

Engine, Transmission, Transfer case removal has started.

I went ahead and removed the evaporator and box because it will need to come out later anyway.

I think something will need to be done about the steering shaft.

I have been away on vacation for a week, but I did manage to pull the engine and trans out of the explorer before I went.

Just need to clean the engine bay up, and then drop the Coyote in and see where I need to start cutting...

SO, tell me if I have this straight; Coyote in the Explorer and the Explorer Windsor 5.0 into the 02 Jeep, both with their "born with" automatics?

OOOOh so much Action! It's like I'm right there! Much action here as well. We have built the forward rear frame mounts, they use a flat steel plate across the former rear axle swing mount, so they bolt in. Rear rear frame mounts designed, hope to weld it today, then weld that big bar in. Placing the Strut tops then loading a subframe with a dummy drive line to place the R,L engine mounts. Should be a busy/ productive day! With all of that done it should roll again and work will continue free of the lift!! Best of Luck to you today my friend!

Well it looks like the explorer will be around for a little bit longer. Not saying that this swap is going to work but it's close so far.

It still needs to go back a few inches and down a few inches also. Custom steering shaft is a must and i'm going to use the Volvo electric power steering pump when the time comes. Guess it's time to bolt the transmission up and try it again.

I did a little work on the Coyote Explorer yesterday, pulled the engine back out and mounted the transmission to it. Then stuck it back in, found out the steering shaft is all kinds of in the way. Not sure how i'm going to work around that problem yet..

The motor needs to come up a 1/4 to 1/2 inch, it's setting on the oil pan in these pictures and it needs to move to the drivers side an inch or so. The steering shaft might kill this project..

The whole reason LS swaps are so popular is because. And SBC 350 before that.
Very true, the LS is a much smaller package. I knew going in this would not be easy or maybe not even doable. But I want to give it a try I haven't lost much if it doesn't fit.

Are there metal valve covers you could modify to gain some clearance and then add several joints? Or move the column over an inch?
