V1 Chris’s 2007 SS/SC track frame build for autocross

I really do need to get an engine lift. Had a difficult time getting the transmission to mount while still connected to the subframe so pulled it and the transmission fluid slowly seeped out onto the floor.

After everything was bolted back up I had remembered that the flywheel was torqued down properly but I had not torqued the pressure plate. Luckily the inspection port is just the right size to get a socket in there.

Lsj intercooler/intake manifold fits but appears the lsj mounts with m8 bolts and the Saab uses m6. I used some spare valve cover bolts to line it up by removing the gasket and filing down the lip, fits perfectly.

While putting the motor back together for the Goblin I'm coming across a lot of "good enough" things originally intended to be temporary im having to redo. This is part of the original shifter bracket cut off and tacked onto the df bracket to align the shift cables. I made a template and cut 1/4 plate welded up and painted with VHT flat black.

Completed k04 turbo coolant and oil lines for the b207r swap. Water feed coming from water pump drain plug and out from top rear k04 port to stock Saab passenger coolant hose. Stock oil feed line and braided hose AN to stock Saab drain in block. Hopefully this will provide adequate fluids to the turbo.

While the Goblin is on the lift this winter getting a fresh motor a few things left out during the build are getting taken care of.

Finally painted the calipers, they were starting to show some signs of rust. Sprayed another layer of header paint on the 3 inch muffler while its off. The garage fab shifter bracket lines up perfectly

Next winter may get a disassemble and powder coat on the frame, only if it feels finished next summer. For right now I'm enjoying modding without having to cringe.

Replaced the fuel line with AN hose, never was happy with the black nylon line and how it was routed. Even got a fancy wrench and aluminum vise jaws, still managed to scrape the finish....

These are 6 AN lines/fittings one 90 at the fuel filter and a 180 to get the line going back towards the fuel pump.

Trying to figure out how much of the back window I want to fill in with Lexan. I should do all the way to the top of the roll cage in case of fire but it would look better and possibly be less drag if it were just up to the seat belt/loop mounting holes.

Is this to keep bad things from the engine bay out of the cockpit or just to block the forward air flow from the rear?

Really just want some sort of separation between me and the motor. I will eventually put a cover over the engine. I realize Lexan is not going to protect me from a fire but is fire resistant. I got a deal on two sheets of 1/4 and I'm going to make a rear spoiler not a wing that is E-mod legal. That will be interesting because will need to keep heat down from the exhaust.

Can you lay the top of your template back? Say 45 degrees or more? It would be like a 1/4 to a 1/3 engine cover giving you some protection from the engine compartment with better air flow.
I think straight up, it's going to pull the air up from under the car from behind the firewall and also work like an air brake. It would be a lot of air being pushed over a wide area causing a ton of drag.

Thats what I'm afraid of but I do have a pan covering the underside of the rear firewall and engine bay.
Purely on a looks basis I think cut it at the belt mounts.

This is what I'm leaning towards maybe just under the belt mounts should work like a deflector and partially shield me from the engine.

Many of the high end convertibles put a relatively short plexi piece between the seats and it stops behind the seats, not extending to the outside edge of the car. Something like this would probably be sufficient to keep some of the air from coming forward (and add a little protection) and not be as much of an air dam on the outside edge next to your shoulder.

Waterdriver
I had to go back in your build log and saw that you are running a full height windscreen. I was thinking you weren't running a windscreen.
Yeah, go up to the shoulder belt bolt holes as Graber mentioned.

Is it in the EMod rules about the cover or seperation?

I don't know all the mod rules yet and they have been changed as of the last fast track release on the 20th . When the evap valve gave up I could feel fuel mist hitting me from the rear (pressure in the tank overcame the pump gasket) and when the last motor cracked a piston oil vapor sprayed into the driver compartment from the excessive pressure blowing oil out the dipstick. That barrier is very appealing to me.

Accusump mostly installed. Still waiting on an adapter to plumb it into the oil filter housing. More details on the install HERE

Working on covering the motor. I may still do a small lexan diffuser behind the seats but this provides a little shielding between me and the motor 18guage steel should hold up to the heat. I would like to extend it over the turbo and fabricate a large lexan spoiler that mounts over the shock tower area much like THIS E-mod MGB

The spoiler is because of the SCCA no wing rule for autocross class?
Looks like the cover would be effective at (mostly) sealing off the engine compartment. Can I ask why the air filter is partially through the cover?:)
