V1 Chubbs' extended track build #300, 2007 SS/SC donor

unplug the pump and see if it still does it.

That fixed it. Unplug the intercooler pump, and the car shuts down immediately. Plug it back in, and it keeps running for 2 or 3 seconds. So now I just need to get some diodes and fix it....eventually. I'll put it on the list of things to fix.

I have one I can send you, I've sent a few out to some other builders. Though all of us have had the problem fixed with it being in the fan circuit which you don't have. It should be easy to test though and easily reversable if it doesn't work or you don't want it wired in. Message me your address if you want me to send you one and I should be able to get one sent out this week.

Time for a status update and a few pics.

The car is essentially built. The punchlist is pretty short....wire up the mirror turn signals, wire the tail lights and 3rd brake light, and wire up the dash buttons. Do a basic alignment. And finally, tune, tune, and tune some more. The car at least moves under it's own power, although I haven't driven it yet (just scooted it around in the garage). The hood and side panels need paint and mounting, but that will happen after the inspection.

The Highway patrol inspection is scheduled for august 17th, next week. They assured me on the phone it was not a safety inspection, they were just checking for stolen parts. I'm not sure exactly how they will do that, as the engine and trans only have serial numbers, not VINs (at least not that I can find). Maybe they have a database of serial numbers too? I'm not sure how that works.

For a few specifics....
the headlights are these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PKHC8VJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They are super tiny, and super bright. I'm impressed with them, although we will see how bright they are on the road. High and low beam functions, and they have an actual beam pattern, which is nice for a cheap headlight. The low beams are actually lower than the high beams. YOu know, like a real headlight!

The seats are ebay specials, and they are exactly what I wanted.

They are super comfortable, and very supportive. No, they are not as supportive as the factory corbeaus, but they also aren't as restrictive. Plenty of room to get your knees apart. They feel great, I doubt I'll slide out of them, and they fit the car perfectly. The sliders they came with are the cheapest things possible, but they do work.

Seat base were also ebay specials: https://www.ebay.com/itm/231857036812
They are flimsy, but they fit the seats and the goblin. It took some 3/4" thick spacers in the rear, and some longer carriage bolts through the frame to mount them, but they work fine. I figured flimsy was ok, since they are mashed against the floor, and any crash loads will be taken by the cage and the belts.

Hopefully I can take it for a quick shakedown run to see what breaks before making the trek to the highway patrol station.

What was the weight on the seats, didn't see it mentioned in the description?

So sorry, I never bothered to weigh them. And now they are in the vehicle.

If I ever pull them out again, I'll be sure to stick one on a scale. Just taking a wild guess, I'd say they are around 30 lb. They certainly aren't lightweight, as they have a metal skeleton, lots of padding, the sliders, and a reclining mechanism. If you want pure racing seats, those are not for you.

I think they are an excellent compromise between a street and a race car though. Comfortable enough for everyday use (and adjustable), supportive enough for the track. I'll let you know if I change my tune after the first couple autocross events.

So I have a personal question….. I’m 6’3” 250lbs, are you anywhere similar? I’m looking for inexpensive reclinable seats and I’m worried that the harness slots might be too low and the seat to narrow.

I think you'd probably love these. I'm 6' 1", about 210. They fit me really well. If anything, I wouldn't mind if the bolsters were just a little more aggressive, or a little narrower. But the suede material is really high friction, so they feel very supportive even if they are slightly wide. I'm definitely not sliding out of them, and they are comfortable. It's nice to be able to spread your legs a bit while cruising.

As with any cheap seats, I worry about how long they will last, but so far they have held up well. I try not to slide across them when I get in and out of the vehicle. So far, they have no wear, though I've only driven the car maybe a dozen times. With some precautions, I'm hoping they do just fine.

I'm 6'2" 230 and could not stand the factory SS seats but am reasonably comfortable in the 36" wide corbeau FX1 seats. I would prefer them to be a little more reclined but that would sacrifice leg room.

Awesome, thank you. Yeah I’m not to worried about how long the seats will last. Just want a cheap set then later look into some better ones.
mom just about to order my kit so I’ll have a bit more time to find seats, but I like the ones you have.
thank you again.

Time for a quick update, although a slightly depressing one.

I have been impatiently waiting for my title to arrive from Missouri. After I did all the inspections, and all the paperwork, and physically drove to Jefferson city to apply for my title with them, I was told it would arrive in approximately 6-8 weeks AFTER the highway patrol installed the VIN plate. They did so, maybe a week after I applied for the title.

Here we are about 8 weeks later. I call Jeff City, and they tell me they never received the paperwork from the highway patrol stating the VIN plate was affixed. I call highway patrol....they DID send the paperwork to Jeff City, pointing fingers at each other. After a few phone calls, I find Jeff City had the paperwork the whole time, had lost it, and/or didn't realize they ever had it. Or something along those lines....

They assure me everything is in order now, and I should get a title next week. I won't hold my breath.

So, here we are approaching November. The title process started with me making a phone call on July 27 to set an inspection. The title process is going to take longer than my build!

Hopefully, my experience is an outlier, and most people can do it faster. So far, I've made no mistakes, and had all my paperwork correct and ready when asked. At least for me, it looks like about 3-4 months to get tags is going to be a minimum turnaround time.

I'm way past due for an update, but it's all good news this time!

The goblin is road legal! It's insured. It has plates. It has a title. It's a "real" car at this point, which is awesome. Unfortunately, it's now December in MO, but the weather was good enough today that I actually got to drive it to work (45 degrees is warm enough, right?)

Tuning is coming along pretty well. I'm not sure exactly how many drives I will need to do with HP tuners before I feel "good" about the VE tables, but it gets a little better every time.

The high speed stability issues I am slowly learning to live with. The main issue seems to be ruts in the road, which are common on rural 2 lane highways. The vehicle tracks, tramlines, hunts, or whatever you want to call it depending on the grooves in the roadway. It makes it extremely nervous feeling, but it doesn't actually seem to cause any issues if you just relax and go with it.

I have driven other flashy cars in the past (my daily is a 392 Charger), but I have never driven anything that gets attention like the goblin. I have not stopped for gas yet without someone asking about it, or offering to trade for their '02 toyota Camry. I would wager exotic cars don't get this much attention. People know what a Lamborghini is, but they've never seen anything like the Goblin. It's a fun time, if you don't mind fielding questions and listening to endless stories about how someones dad built a kit car that one time but they don't remember what it was (cool story, bro).

Sounds like a little bumpsteer is happening when you get into the bumpy/rutty stuff. But could also be needing a little more toe-in if the wandering wants to put you into the weeds or the opposite lane. Sounds like you're already working on that, guessing you will have this all figured out by the spring thaw. ;):D And congrats on getting legal!

What size tires are you running? Just asking because I run a staggered 265/295 tire setup on my Mustang and the heavily-rutted roads will push and pull that car all over the place. More often than not, the 295's in the back are the only issue.

C
My tires are stock cobalt size, 215s I believe. I'm still running the stock cobalt wheels. I got a killer deal on some RE-71Rs from tire rack on closeout, but they were only for the cobalt size, so that's what I stuck with.

I'm still trying to figure out if the handling weirdness is from the back end or the front end. You'd think it'd be easy to tell, but it isn't, at least not for me. I think i'm going to try a bit more toe in at the rear and see where that gets me.
