V1 Jason in Texas - ext. track - 09 SS/TC

Ark :D
We ALL have a number. The question is, if that number was met, would we build another Goblin?

I don't think my wife would stand for it. She's ok with the car now, but she's still not ok with the fact that it consumed so much of the garage for so long. I don't think I could get away with building another Goblin, but I'd definitely build a Goblin II. ;););)

Monthly autoX fun at the Police Department training grounds.

A long hot day for burning gas and wearing out tires just for fun.

We thought we were going to have five Goblins represented, but two decided on a vacation instead.
I think we have two other guys that have been involved with autoX who are going to be building Goblins now too. @Rttoys said something about a sales commission from the mother ship.............. ;)

Russell had some good pics and video.

We got Cooper's MiJata back into action. I think he prefers his car to my Goblin. Oh well.

Goblin on friends!!...

What tires are you running?

I missed last month, but made it back to melt in the heat with Russell and Tim.
A little rain the day before made it interesting for our open wheel cars.
Russell and I have some cool headsets to talk the whole time. Kind of fun since helmets usually isolate you. It sure adds to the camaraderie as well as the "ribbing" of each other.
We also had a little fun with the Goblin picture thread during the day.

So got the new PSI maker bolted on. Went fairly easy since it is hanging on the back of the engine. The old turbo spool had some play in it and I believe was the cause of my smoky exhaust. The other Houston Goblin Guys were giving me a hard time following me on the track - while faking a cough, cough...
Found the typical crack in the exhaust manifold. Oh well.
Always a little concern when you fire it up after work like this and see the oil film on the turbo burning off. Smoke from the engine bay is a little worrisome even when you are expecting it. No leaks of oil, water, or exhaust so far though.

Maybe it is just me, but the new turbo seems to spool a little faster. Sounds slightly different too. It is just a new K04. 300 hp is enough for me right now. If anyone is interested, it was only a hundred or so more than having the old one re-built. www.turbochargersdirect.com
I changed the oil as well. 2,999 miles after the first one. :) 85,667 on the odometer.
Gonna do a can of CRC intake/valve cleaner next as well. Direct injection engines could use an internal cleaning every now and then.

I am scheduled for a rookie driving school in two weeks with my son in lieu of that weekend's autoX (even though we have done 20 or so autoX). Something different. More actual track time. We shall see if it was the right decision.

Posts like this one make me acutely aware that I've never had anyone who is as interested in Goblins as I am, to follow me and eyeball whether I've got a similar smokescreen coming out. One if these days, I have to find a way to get my car to one of the meets.

You load that tune with boost to 25 psi, and will find out if your turbo seals are good….. ;/

The Houston gaggle of Goblins missed this month's autoX. So, my son and I attended a rookie driving school put on by our SCCA folks. We got some sideways looks when we showed up since most knew who we were and are not really rookies.

Good instruction is important. But, actually being able to put concepts to practice is another thing indeed. We had four sessions in the morning - circular skid pad, "bean" skid pad where it was larger and had a short straight side to create increasing and decreasing turns, long slalom, and a braking/turn course. It was really inciteful to break down these elements and be able to focus solely on each one.
FYI - three laps on a skid pad turning counter-clockwise WILL INDEED make fuel flow from the vent on our gas tanks.

We had about 15 different instructors ride along providing different opinions throughout the day. Interesting view points for sure. Had one guy tell me I needed to get on the gas sooner and harder out of corners. OK. I didn't bother to tell him that I can't spool up the turbo any faster.... Of course some left foot braking and keeping RPM's up with the right foot would work - at least if my left foot had more coordination.

We ran a full autoX in the afternoon. Gotta love driving at the limits of your vehicle. :)

I purposely ran the day on my street tires - first time in over a year. Oh my! Going backward with traction is not an easy thing to do. Good practice though since I hit traction limit much sooner in each course element.

On the skid pad everyone said to take the shortest line which is the tightest and slowest speed line. I was not convinced. So, I sat down to mathematically prove to myself if they were right. If you assume you are turning at the tire's traction limit, a 10% increase in turning radius at the higher velocity will result in a 5% slower time. Calcs included below if you care. Now I know where all my "lost time" is on the course..... ;)
