Sneak Peek - Goblin V2

Would be really cool to have a goblin with a built EA888 though. The 350hp they showed is on the super conservative end, 500+ would be totally reasonable with some fueling and a better tune.

So, a recent change in life circumstances has seen a donor thrust upon me (unfortunately it's my own car... :(). @Lonny Now that you have prototypes built, do you have an approximate list of parts needed from the donor you are able to share?

Went into the wall at Laguna Seca :/. It wasn't as bad as it could have been (good enough to still have a usable donor, and I'm fine), but the frame is done and crumple zones used up.

Gonna guess, probably not. The running and driving prototype at goblinfest still had a ways to go.

Congrats to DF kit car on the launch of their V2 and website!

Curious to see what total kit cost plus donor ends up being for the new builders. The V2 has a lot to offer and is "builder friendly".

Saw the updated site with the V2, now to convince the wife....
With less dependence on a donor, does it make more sense to buy the individual components rather than an entire vehicle?

I doubt it. Some V1 builders made a goblin from components, but it ended up being more expensive.
If money isn't a big issue, and you prefer new parts rather than used parts, maybe it makes sense for you.

Not sure about V2, but it is more than just an engine and transmission. You need drive axles, wheel bearings & hubs, steering rack, inner and outer tie rods, steering wheel shaft. Electrical harness for the engine, body, and other sub harnesses with the associated computers. V1 had 3 computers: ECM, power steering and body control module. Dash instrument cluster, ignition switch & key programmed to match the cars security systems, probably other electrical sensors like yaw sensor, ambient light sensor, key fob/TPMS receiver, air temperature sensor, etc.
Generally speaking, it is cheaper to buy a whole car that has a totaled body, than it is to buy individual components.
You can sell off any unused VW components and make back some $$$.

Man, I am so freaking torn on this V2 stuff.

If asked with no context, "Do you want to build another car?", the answer would flat out be NO. But obviously there is context.

On one hand, building V1 was great experience that has led me to being more "handy" in general, attempting (and succeeding at) projects around the house that I never would have prior to building the car. There were also lessons learned while building V1 that could be put to good use in a V2 build; I would make less regrettable decisions that need fixed later (ie, coating the inside of the floor pan).

On the other hand, the part I would least look forward to is the search for a new donor. I got extremely lucky with V1's (second) donor, finding a wrecked/totaled low-mile 2008 SS/TC within range of me for $1700, no dealing with brokers or Copart/IAAI, and I doubt lightning would strike twice. There's also the issue of having to sell V1 #187 prior to starting my journey on V2, as well as having to break it to my wife that I'm diving in again on another build.

Sorry for the post. Just musing, I guess.

Overall I do not believe you should feel badly. Your build witnessed some of the worst possibilities in just getting a donor! Building a Goblin is a shock course in used/crashed cars as well! Though your experience has some outstandingly poor luck bad points, I think your experience is about average across the public. That you persevered and finished your build puts you in the rare air of folks who succeed where most people just quit. You learned a whole lot mister! Be proud and now comes the “Superman leaves home” moment, “will you use these newfound powers for good or evil?”.

Repeat response (same as @Mahkoi) - keep the V1 that you put some much time and effort into and build a V2, you'll have a matched set. ;) No one can ever have too many toys in the garage!
