V1 Ian's 06 SS/SC Extended Track/City/Drag/Motocross/Whatever Goblin #359

That's good to know about the bolts. Thank you!
I want to get my Goblin on the track before the end of May. Hopefully also registered for street use, too.
Hello Goblinista! I am "The Wandering Troubadour of the Chevy Cobalt" known as Ah.B.Normal. As luck would have it my wandering will take us to Galveston by Dec 10, back to FW area around Festivus with Grand Sons and back to Galveston for our winter rest. I believe we depart G.I. in March?
I know Austin is NOT just down the street from G. Island but I do travel.
Anyhow I sort out stuff and sometimes can make site visits. It would not be out of the question for me to visit your Austin area garage sometime in Dec- March. (The wife does all the holiday scheduling so I will not have exact dates for my availability until after we arrive in TX)
For reference look up a builder on this forum, Josh09. He is north of DFW and last summer WE got his Goblin finished after they had a second child, stuff "had to be cleaned up" and he discovered he lost stuff; then he stalled out. Brain Fry!, too much just plain old Life, too many project questions and had a hard time figuring out what to attack first?, as it all seemed to need attacking FIRST. He will probably tell you, "Sure, invite him to help, but get some ear plugs because that old dude can ramble!" I hope he'd mention I know Cobalts through and through, down to the nuts and bolts. Thus Goblin's. I know stuff about these cars that I didn't even want to know!
But PLEASE!, keep posting questions and problems and we Forum Ghosts will all see what we can do! And Bubba, we have proved we can do a lot!
ALSO: I posted in Classified that I procure Cobalt odds and ends, at hopefully reasonable prices. Once you ID a missing bit, tell me and I'll see what I can do.

Alas, I do know how fickle Troubadours can be. However, it is cause for celebration when they bless your hall with their presence. I shall inform the guards (our dogs) to let you pass if you travel through my domain.
Even If all I get to do is stop in and admire your handiwork, I will be close enough to stop in just to visit and swap lame stories of the good ol' days we've never had! I'll be in touch after December 10.

This week I addressed some of the problems I listed earlier.

Problem #1: I asked people to help me finish taking apart the Cobalt for my birthday last year. They did an excellent job, except nothing is labeled, so I don't know where anything came from.

This ended up being not much of a problem. Yes, I have a jumble of bolts, but the feedback is that it doesn't matter.

Problem #2: The frame is rusted, so I must clean it up. I've de-rusted small parts before, but nothing this large.

This isn't a problem, it's more of a decision. Do I paint the frame myself, or do I get it powdercoated? I'm putting this decision off for now.

Problem #3: I pulled the dash but didn't take it apart yet.

Still a problem. However, I solved other issues instead.

I've been holding onto the carcass of the donor for over a year now because I wasn't sure that I stripped everything out of it that I needed. After looking the donor over, I needed to pull the gas filler neck, but I think I pulled everything else. I collected all of the detritus so it'll be easier to dispose of later.

  • A side note, I saw this Ecotec sticker...

...and all I could think of is the movie The Mummy...

Anyway... I started working through the donor checklist to make sure I had everything.

I sent an email to GfKitcar to see if I could sign up for their wiring harness service but I guess I used the incorrect email.

    Next steps:

    * Finish the donor item checklist.
    * What is the current timeline for DfKitcar's wiring harness service?
    * Decide if the frame will be painted by me or send out for powder coating.
    * Disassemble the dash for parts.

Call DF directly to get the harness service set up. Way faster than trying to go through email if your looking for prompt service. The DF just doesn't have time read everyone's emails as quickly as most people expect - just too many.

I can’t see inside the doner, but most people forget the parking brake handle, cables and the aluminum tubes. Plus, on the LSJ, I like the stock flexable fuel line over the Df supplied one, where it attaches to the engine fuel rail. Might be worth a grab and decide later.

one more thing. when you take the carcass in to the scrap yard, they usually want the title. The problem is, you need the cobalt title to get your goblin title through the state. The cobalt title is basically proof of ownership of the parts you used on the goblin. it gets more complicated without the cobalt title. If a scrapyard won’t take the carcass without the title, you’ll have to cut up the carcass and take it in piece by piece.

here’s a pic of the fuel line I’m talking about

I'm pretty sure I pulled the parking break, but I'll double-check. I didn't grab the fuel line, so I'll put that on the to-do list.

Thank you, I was looking at having all the parts taken away all at once, but I think I'll just start making a dump/scrap run each week to avoid the title issue. It'll also give me the piece of mind that if I missed something, I can still remove it from the donor. I'll just have to move the frame somewhere less conspicuous to keep the wife happy.

Nut and bolt sorting looks very familiar! The stuff you're just not sure of?, dump it in 5 gal buckets, you can always trash that stuff later! Do not scrap any wiring with the donor, its too small to worry about storing and a pita if you need another.(excluding the wiring in the doors.)

I tried again tonight, knowing they were closed, to verify. I don't know what the hiccup was, but I got to voicemail. Tomorrow: see if I can get DFKitCar to handle my wiring harness.
