Mk7 Volkswagen Golf
The Goblin V2 makes use of several key components from the Mk7 Volkswagen Golf, including the powertrain, engine wiring and ECU, steering rack, fuel pump, and more. While it is technically possible to piece these items together separately, it is usually much easier—and often more cost-effective—to purchase a complete donor car from an auto auction like Copart or IAA.
Which Mk7 Golf should you choose?
While each model year of the Mk7 Golf received minor updates, every 1.8T and GTI offers a highly tunable, turbocharged engine that performs exceptionally well in the Goblin V2. No matter which year you choose, you’ll have a donor with impressive potential for power and responsiveness.
Donor Horsepower
Both options are turbocharged: 1.8T with 170 horsepower and the GTI with 210 to 228 horsepower.
The 1.8T engine, found in the base Mk7 Golf models, delivers a solid 170 horsepower right out of the gate. With its stock IS12 turbocharger, the 1.8T offers excellent tuning potential, capable of reaching up to 250 horsepower with a simple software tune.
The GTI engine offers 210 to 228 horsepower, depending on the model year, with early models (2015-2017) rated at 210 hp and later years gradually increasing to 228 hp. Despite these differences, a software tune brings all GTI models to similar power levels, easily surpassing 350 horsepower with the stock IS20 turbocharger.
Donor Transmission
Transmission options for the 1.8T Golf include a 5-speed manual or automatic, while the GTI offers a 6-speed manual and the DSG dual-clutch, upgraded to 7-speed in 2019.
The 1.8T engine in the base Golf models comes with either a 5-speed manual or a torque converter automatic transmission. Notably, the 1.8T was not available with Volkswagen’s dual-clutch DSG transmission, which is reserved for the GTI models.
The GTI, on the other hand, offers either a 6-speed manual or the high-performance DSG transmission. In 2019, Volkswagen upgraded the DSG from a 6-speed to a 7-speed. The DSG provides lightning-fast, smooth gear changes, while the manual gives drivers a traditional, hands-on experience.
Where Can I Find a GTI Donor?
The best value for your build is often a wrecked donor from an insurance auction, such as Copart or IAA. These sources typically offer GTIs at a lower price due to their salvage status. You can also find donors on platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, though these options are usually more expensive since they are often drivable cars sold directly by the owner.
What Will I Need From The Donor?
When stripping down your GTI donor for the Goblin V2 build, you’ll need to salvage several key components. However, if you are familiar with Goblin V1, you'll notice that fewer parts are reused from the donor.
This list will evolve as the Goblin V2 is developed but it should give a good starting point for stripping your donor Golf.
Component | Notes |
---|---|
Engine | Make sure the engine looks intact and undamaged. |
Transmission | Make sure the transmission looks intact and undamaged. |
ECM (Engine Control Module) | Located on the driver side of the engine bay. |
Powertrain Wiring Harness | Make sure the powertrain harness hasn't been cut or removed. |
Driver Side Axle | You'll reuse your driver side axle and we'll supply the passenger side. |
Steering Rack | If possible, check the steering rack through its entire travel. |
Steering Column | You'll reuse parts of the steering column in the Goblin V2. |
Main/Body Wiring Harness | You will need some of the circuits in the main harness. |
Accelerator Pedal | Goblin V2 uses the Golf's accelerator pedal. |
Fuel Pump and Module | The fuel pump will be removed from inside the fuel tank and the module will be pulled from on top of the tank. |
Ignition Switch | Required if you’re using the standard key setup to start the Goblin. |
Special Note | At this time, we are uncertain if the push-button start system will be compatible with our setup. |
