V1 Jason in Texas - ext. track - 09 SS/TC

Zoom Zoom
Went out on an ice cream run tonight in the Goblin with the wife. We hit a little stop and go traffic on the way there (Houston ya know). Some guy in a big ol' lifted truck was hanging his head out gawking at us from the next lane when he ran into the car in front of him. Not going very fast. Nobody hurt. Maybe a bumper. And some pride. I told my wife she sure is turning heads these days.... We kept on going wondering how many more times THAT is going to happen???!!!

Getting my second weight for the Goblin on some race scales tomorrow. I will report back on that to compare with the Cat scale weight above.

Goblin on, friends! :)
I bet she thinking that’s exactly why he ran into the back of the car ( I’m hot and I know it ) !! LOL

Today I filled the tank to "full" by letting the gas pump sense the back pressure and shut off automatically. Shortly after, I stopped at a friend's place where the road was very crowned. I pulled to the side of the road and the passenger side was next to the curb. As I was talking to him, I noticed something dripping - no running out. The slant of the road was enough, and the fuel level high enough, and the cool gas was heating up enough that there was a dribble of gas out of the overflow line. Concerning to see something dripping to the ground! I pulled to level ground and it stopped.

Note to self. Keep the Goblin level. :)

So, back to the weight of my Goblin. Above you can see that a certified Cat scale got me at 1,660 lbs. Several on the forum noted that seemed heavy. Today, I was able to get another data point on a different set of scales. 1623 lbs. I filled up the tank just after weighing it with 6.7 gallons. At 6 lbs/gal, that means I had 40 lbs less fuel in the tank than the first weighing. That means my two different scale weights only vary by 3 lbs. Therefor, I accept my Goblin does indeed weigh 1660 lbs. Dang overweight sluggard........

The SS seats are 2x45 =90 pounds, and you have 67 pounds of fuel.
So with 30 pounds for 2 racing seats, and low fuel you are only 1533 pounds. Sounds better. ;)

This is a problem with motorcycles. Fill up and with this heat it’ll expand and go out the overflow.

The layout of the tank does not help us here either. The tank is about 32" wide. If we fill it within 1" of the top of the tank, it only takes a 1.8 deg slope for the gas to reach the top of the tank on the low side. I was at least a good 2-3 degree slope today. Not sure if a different position for the vent would be better - like the middle of the tank instead of an end? It would not take much of a turn and associated G force to get the fuel to slope the same way.

Also, someone (maybe George) mentioned starving the pump in a long left hand sweep (pump on the driver side of course). A more complex shape of tank with a sump drop of 1"-2" where the fuel pump is would help with that. Maybe a mod down the road?

Both my friends who allowed me to use the race scales today race spec Miatas in SCCA. After crawling around the Goblin, they just HAD to take it for a spin. It is without saying that they jumped on it HARD! When they returned, their smiles said it all. Both of them said it was nothing like they had ever driven before - and these two guys have been around plenty of expensive cars and horsepower in their days. Both agreed it was the fastest car they had ever driven (and not even on a track). Now that is a compliment!!!!!

That puts our little Goblins into perspective!!! :)

That wind shield stands out and looks awesome
As I put more miles on it, I REALLY like the results it gives with air flow.

Perhaps I will regret going with the extended height windshield, haha. Then again, I'm in PA, where it stays under 50 degrees until a random day sometime in May or June, then all of a sudden it's 90+ degrees until October, and I wanted to be able to drive this thing well into the cooler months.

Just buy another windscreen and have one cut for summer and the other for winter!.....$$$...... :)

I drove out of town about 30 minutes to visit a fellow builder - Russel (Rttoys). He is deep into his build and not far from finishing.

Lots of differences looking at a turbo next to a supercharged version.

I took him for a ride and then let him jump into the driver seat. His wife (who is also involved with the build) came out and did some inspecting too. They took it for a ride and returned with smiles. OF COURSE!!!!! There was mention of getting some renewed excitement to finish theirs now.

It is so cool to hang out with a fellow builder and talk Goblin. At some future "cars and coffee" it will be great to have four or five of us Goblins lined up together!!!!

Goblin on, friends!!!!
