Can I use a different donor?

The Goblin V1 kit is designed around the Chevrolet Cobalt engine and transmission. While it is possible to swap in a different engine, you will still need a full Cobalt donor to complete the build because the Goblin V1 reuses many key components from the donor that are not included in the kit.

Here are the major parts reused from the Cobalt donor:

  • Subframe
  • Control arms
  • Knuckles
  • Bearing hubs
  • Steering rack
  • Steering column
  • Pedal boxes
  • Brake master cylinder
  • Shifter assembly
  • BCM and ECM (and TCM on automatic cars)
  • Ignition switch
  • Gauge panel
  • Fuel pump

If you decide to use a different engine or transmission, you will need to modify or fabricate custom solutions to make everything work together. For example:

  • You would need to use Cobalt suspension components (subframe, control arms, knuckles, hubs) to build the Goblin rear suspension.
  • You would need custom axles to adapt your new transmission to the Cobalt hubs.
  • You would need to adapt the Cobalt shifter to work with your transmission or design your own shifting system.
  • You would need to modify or replace pedals, wiring, computers, and control modules.
  • You would need to adapt or redesign engine and transmission mounting locations on the Goblin frame.

Because so much of the Goblin V1 relies on Cobalt components, performing an engine swap requires significant custom fabrication and electrical integration. Most builders find that using the original Cobalt powertrain is the simplest and most cost-effective approach.
