Swapping SS/SC or SS/TC Powertrains into a Base Cobalt Donor

Last updated: Nov 18, 2025 by Adam Doyle

Swapping an SS/SC or SS/TC powertrain into a Goblin that was built using a base-model Cobalt donor, or combining a base donor and an SS donor, is not an easy task. The supercharged and turbocharged models use different electronics, fuel system components, sensors, and wiring than the base models, so mixing parts between them requires substantial additional work and sourcing of missing components.

Here are some of the major differences that make the swap challenging:

  • ECM: The base ECM must be reprogrammed to work with the SS/SC engine and is completely incompatible with the SS/TC engine. A matching SS/TC ECM is required rather than flashing the base unit.
  • Fuel pump: The base and SS/SC pumps are interchangeable but the turbo fuel pump is larger and supports the direct-injection fuel system. The correct SS/TC pump and tank setup are required.
  • Wiring harness: The SS engines uses additional sensors and require the powertrain wiring harness from the SS donor. SS/SC and SS/TC harnesses are different from one another.
  • Clutch pedal: The base model clutch pedal will work with the SS/SC hardware but the SS/TC clutch pedal uses a different return spring design.

For builders who want more power, here are alternative approaches that typically require less custom work:

  • Add a supercharger and supporting hardware pulled from a Cobalt SS/TC.
  • Add a turbocharger and supporting hardware pulled from a Cobalt SS/TC.
  • Add a new turbocharger from the many that are available online.

If you do add a supercharger or turbocharger, DF Kit Car can sell you the intercooler/heat exchanger system that we supply for SS builds. Just reach out to us to put together an order for those pieces.
