V1 Deviant Goblin - Extended Track #373 | 07 SS/SC donor

R
February 17, 2022
No updates on the harness or donor part prep. Really waiting for the cold weather to break before I refocus back on that stuff. But, on Feb 07 my frame went on the jig, and only 2 days later on Feb 09 passed inspection! This morning I got my invoice and got that paid for stage 1. Shipping quote is $700, and estimated "ready date" for carrier pick up is Mar 07.

Nice I’m #380 estimated pickup 3/7 coming to northeast our kits may travel together lol

Cold. Come on bud. I built min in Michigan during winter in a Costco carport.

I thought I was going to get more done over winter, but after the new year hit I just got lazy when it comes to anything out in the shop. Hopefully another 3 or 4 weeks and my frame will be here and that will reinvigorate things. I really want to have the frame here before I tape up my harness anyway, so I can test fit it and add a few things to it...at least that's my plan. The coldest of the winter season should be behind us by the time my frame gets here though!

Yup, sounds like they may be on the same truck in the near future!

Happy Thursday morning. Stewart Transportation showed up, as expected, at 7:20 this morning to drop off my frame and stage 1 kit. It is now safely in my shop!
I had originally hoped to have the wire harness done by now, but that definitely hasn't happened. However, I figure this let's me test fit the harness before final tape up so not a big deal. I've got a few frame mods planned, then off to powder coating. Going to add a few top bars, a higher harness bar, and tabs to the side to mount in aluminum panels (very similar to what @DCMoney has done).
Color...still undecided. Likely doing a blue/orange theme, but not sure which color the frame will become.

It's a shame that I'll be working all day today and can't even unpack the frame yet to really get a look at it. Maybe this evening?

Ah, so yours was on that truck too! They said they are heading to Michigan after they dropped mine off, and I know both you and neodied are in MI. Maybe he gets his today, and yours gets dropped off in the morning?
I'm earlyish morning (7-8AM) tomorrow.

Cool! I knew they had 5 frames on the truck when they picked up, dropped one in Missouri and mine in Kentucky. I guess you two are the next ones, and I think the final one is going to CT. That's definitely a haul, haha.

I'm really excited to see actually how big/small it is. It's one thing to see photos and measure out dimensions in my head. Looking forward to swapping the bulky Cobalt shell in my tiny garage for something much more compact.

Well my first thought was that it's smaller than I expected but I haven't spent more than 5 minutes looking at it. Hoping to unpack the boxes and other things from it later this evening and really get a sense for it's size.

When I made a visit to Red Oak, I had already expected it to be smaller than I thought based on reading posts. This expectation made it seem bigger than expected when I finally saw it in person.

My perspective didn't change until I installed the seat to check pedal/wheel location. It feels smaller now. lol

Been a productive weekend with nice-ish weather! Unpacked the frame and inventoried all frame 1 piece, and all was there. My oldest was eager to get in so he had me put a seat in for him to try things out.

Picking up some tubing this week to made roof bars, but I'm still undecided which I like best. Would love to hear opinions of others, but I'm leaning more toward the third photo (open V in the front, with the bars meeting in the middle of the rear).

And fortunately, I was re-motivated to continue with my wiring so I finished up video 4 and am about half way through video 5 (up to the point of introducing the headlight harness). Harness is taking shape and things have been pretty smooth and uneventful so far, which is good!

The main point of the roof bar is to give a place to grab to pull yourself out of the seat and to hold when lowering in. To me, this is best done with photo 2 with double (or single like I did) bars directly in the middle. Photo 1 and 3 would both have impacts on head space when trying to lift up and lower down IMO. Just my $0.02

I second option 2. The few times I've climbed in and out of mine, I would have hit my head with option 3 for sure, likely not with Option 1, and definitely not with Option 2. I think Option 1 & 3 would have headspace issues if you ever need to don/doff a helmet.

Having hit my head on the rear crossbar twice while working on the fuel tank install I can tell you it's not a pleasant feeling.

Yep. Option 2 here also. You have potential to hit your head on the other 2 configurations.

Go a step further and incorporate an overhead console between the bars

I appreciate all the feedback. I know Option 2 is the more popular one, but part of me wants to do something different which is why I was thinking of alternatives.

This right here is my favorite idea so far. Add in a third bar perpendicular to the roof bars, that I can put a box/panel in with switches. For what, I'm not sure yet...but let's say lights, line lock, and other accessories that I could want in the future. I'm going to do some sketching and see what I may like before I share that here, but this has sparked new ideas. :D
