Assembled the pistons today and figured I’d double check the piston ring gaps to be on the safe side. Service manual suggests .010 to .020 for safe operation. Rings sent with the Diamond pistons are .008 so ordered a ring filer. Should be here Tuesday.

Pistons finally installed. I need to stop procrastinating and just get the engine build finished. Oil pan, ported head and stage 2 cams will go on eventually.

Been awhile since I’ve updated this. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much progress on the goblin with it being so hot in the garage and life being busy. To top it off, my family was in an accident on 3 August and totaled the truck so there hasn’t been any chance with that.

Thankfully, we all lived. 4 out of the 6 people involved (3 vehicles total) went to the hospital by ambulance. My daughter was in the back seat, in the middle, rear facing child seat and only sustained a bruise from the harness she was in. My wife and I got pretty banged up and have been going to the chiropractor 3 days a week since the accident. Also have spent the past 3ish weeks looking for a replacement vehicle. The current market though is way over inflated on pricing and any new vehicle is also seeing a $10k+ premium over MSRP in my area, making the hunt difficult to swallow.

However, My wife and I have always believed everything happens for a reason. Something as bad as an accident had to have happened in order for something better to come along. Insurance totaled out the truck (was a year old) and we got some money back on top of it thankfully). But I was also afforded the opportunity by the local dealership to obtain my dream car, something I wouldn’t have been able to accept if we still had the truck. Everyone, meet my Goblin’s new Big Brother!

Thankfully I have all of the mods already for the goblin that I plan to do through the build process, otherwise those extra funds would be going towards the c8 (wrap, wheels, etc.) I was a little on the fence whether or not to finish the Goblin build because I got my dream car (something the Goblin was gonna help fill the void for). But I’ve decided to finish the build at the very least, then decide if I will keep it or not (I’m sure I will want to after all the work I’ll have put into it).

They’re going for 30-40k over sticker here, but the SA said he’d honor the original deal for the buyer who put the order in and backed out once it arrived. That deal was made over a year ago before prices started to skyrocket more.

Will the Goblin match the C8 in red?
The new Vettes are just so dang beautiful! I road in one with a guy recently at autoX. They can perform amazingly! You will have two very special vehicles in the garage when you finish the Goblin.

T-boned him doing 45mph when he decided a U-turn from the right lane was a good idea. Car behind us couldn’t stop in time either. Glad we were in the truck and not the x3 or the forte. Neither of those would’ve fared as well I feel.

I’m not sure I will have the reds match exactly as I’m planning a wrap scheme for the c8 and it will be more of a matte red. Might be hard to replicate on the goblin. Although I’ve thought about switching from a red chassis to a black chassis and wrapping the panels the same color as the vette so they could be very close. This is what I’m looking to mimic on the c8:

Well actually, I had a 2020 z4 M40i that I traded in for the truck because I wanted to do the responsible thing and have something for the family (wife, daughter and dogs) that made life a little more convenient while having a toddler still on bottles (1yo). The z4 was red as well and the goblin scratched the itch for speed that I lost with the z4. Kinda took a step back from the “responsible” part going back to a sports car, but I couldn’t pass it up. This was my z4:

It was stage 2 tuned, catless DP, drop in KN filter and doing 450ish at the wheels. The stock 275s couldn’t launch it to say the least, but from a roll it hauled ass.

I like that color scheme on the C8, it strikes as McLaren-esque. Why not do the same wrap on the Goblin as the Corvette? Or do you not want them to match exactly?

I actually wouldn’t mind if they matched exactly. I’d just paint the chassis black instead of red, and instead of carbon fiber wrapping the body panels I’d wrap them the same red as the c8. I’d also have to change my wheels to be black from the bronze I have for the goblin, but might do that later if it doesn’t clash to much with the rest of it.

Unfortunately with the heat I haven’t dedicated any time to the build. Also in my Capstone course for my MS degree and that has been taking up any free time I have with these projects. Hoping to pick up the build this winter some time, but no promises.

Dedicated a few hours to the engine rebuild yesterday. Going to start masking everything off and paint the engine unless someone sees something that should be on during the paint process. Feel accomplished getting as much done as I did after not working on it for over half a year.

Once the engine is painted and reassembled/mated to the transmission, I will be building a chassis rotisserie following @dvldawg design when he did his chassis. I decided not to go powder coat, at least not for now (maybe ever?) Instead I’m going to use duplicolor metalcast red with a rust oleum metallic base coat.

The plan is to build with the side intakes and give everything a trial period, see how I like the setup. If it doesn’t appear to be beneficial, then I may chop the side intakes off and paint over those mounting spots so it looks nice again. Couldn’t do that with powder without a full disassembly and I wanted to avoid that for now.

Did some trials with the metalcast base coat and the rust oleum metallic base. Also did a plastidip trial with and without clear because @Ark :D swears by the plastidip chassis and I’m kind of on his side after spraying it. Wasn’t too fond of the texture though and trying to visualize the end product with it. Otherwise it held up fantastic to the scratch test, which the others did not (edge of the steel bar dragged across the painted surface).

Here are the samples side by side and the order they are in. Used the blue metalcast for the drag test because didn’t want to mess up the red samples. The plastidip was dragged on both samples and you barely see it on the straight plastidip. The glossifier one shows no signs of the drag which was very impressive.

The point of the drag was to see how well the paint would hold up to wear from sitting on the top side rail to get in and out of the chassis. Also gives a somewhat idea of how it will handle rock chips and getting banged here and there (car doors for example). I did not use a clear coat on top of the metalcast samples, but I don’t think it would’ve made much difference.

I would DEFINITELY NOT use plastidip on the chassis. The body, yes ... frame, no way. It will not hold up over time to things like getting in and out of the car, etc.

Side intakes? Can you elaborate? Interested to see what you idea is and where/how you will mount them? I'm still kicking ideas around for intercooler heat exchanger side intakes - I posted my first idea in my build log in case you're interested.
